Winning a Grand Slam tournament is an achievement some professional tennis players can only dream of.
To win one on home soil, though, is particularly special.
The Sporting News takes a look at the latest homegrown players to have won the Australian Open.

Who was the last Australian to win the Australian Open singles?
In 2022, Ash Barty ended a 44-year drought, becoming the first Australian since 1978 to be crowned a singles champion at Melbourne Park.
She defeated Danielle Collins 6-3 7-6 (2) in the final at Rod Laver Arena.
The 26-year-old then shocked fans by announcing her retirement in March that year, less than two months after her maiden Australian Open title.
Barty’s achievement followed Chris O’Neil‘s success in the 1978 Australian Open.
She fought past American Betsy Nagelsen in the final 6-3 7-6 (3) in what was the sole Grand Slam triumph of her career.
2022 Australian of the Year and disability advocate Dylan Alcott was the last Australian to win the men’s quad singles, taking out the title seven times in a row between 2015-2021.
Who was the last Australian man to win the Australian Open singles?
Mark Edmondson is the most recent Australian to win the men’s singles at the Australian Open.
The Gosford-born product emerged victorious at the 1976 edition of the tournament.
He defeated defending champion and fellow Australian John Newcombe in the final 6-7 6-3 7-6 6-1.
Notably, he achieved the feat despite being ranked 212th in the world – the lowest-ranked winner of a Grand Slam tournament since ATP rankings were introduced in 1973.
How many Australians have won the Australian Open?
A total of 42 different Australian players – 15 women and 27 men – have won the Australian Open singles tournament.
Margaret Court is in a world of her own with 11 women’s singles titles, whilst Roy Emerson tops the men with six titles.
