What does Novak Djokovic think of Nishesh Basavareddy’s game?

Djokovic has faced hundreds of different opponents throughout his illustrious two-decade career.

Another player will be added to that list, as Novak Djokovic will commence his quest for a record-extending 11th Australian Open title against Nishesh Basavareddy.

Ahead of his first meeting with the NextGen ATP Finals star, Djokovic has been watching him closely and plans to be at his best when they take to the court on Monday.

“Well, to be honest, I don’t know much about him,” the 37-year-old told reporters. “I watched him play yesterday actually for the first time. I think he’s played the semi-finals of the New Zealand tournament.

“I saw that he’s very quick. He’s a very talented player. He’s got great hands. He’s very dynamic. He can serve well, hit spots.

“Just a very complete game overall. Yeah, I mean, it’s going to be his, I guess, first time in the main draw of the Grand Slam, wild card, playing on the center court.

“Not much to lose. I’m sure that he is going to be really pumped to make a statement. I have to obviously approach that match very seriously, like any other, and do my best to get a win. Also in the process, enjoy the nice moment of sharing the court with him.”

How has Nishesh Basavareddy started his 2025 season?

Basavareddy produced some impressive displays at the Next Gen ATP Finals despite not making it to the semi-finals.

He rebounded from the loss in great fashion by qualifying for the Brisbane International and reaching the round of 16.

Basavareddy suffered a three-set defeat to veteran Gael Monfils, and faced the Frenchman again at the ASB Classic this time in the semi-finals.

Basavareddy secured wins over the likes of Alejandro Tabilo and another young American in Alex Michelsen to reach the last four, but once again was outdone by Monfils, who won 7-6(5) 6-4.

The youngster was given a wildcard to compete in the Australian Open, where he will face Djokovic in the biggest match of his career so far.
