One day in early May, an expert team of navy commanders, submarine officers, industry veterans and senior defence officials was invited to attend a confidential meeting in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra.

During their discussions with senior government officials, they presented a document with an unpalatable message: Australia is on course for a financial and strategic disaster with its billion-dollar AUKUS nuclear submarine project.
