The first-ever AFL Open will commence next week in Queensland in a showpiece event for special needs players.
From November 22-26, 300-plus players, coaches and support staff will represent 17 clubs in the event for intellectual impairment and wheelchair players.
Ninety matches over the five days will be held at Pine Sports Complex in Brisbane, with teams including Vic Metro, Vic Country, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales/ACT, Northern Territory, Tasmania and the Returned and Services League (RSL).
Two titles will be on the line at the event: the AFL Open – Wheelchair and the AFL Open – Inclusion.
It will be free to attend for all fans and the final two days can be watched live and free on AFL Play YouTube or Kayo Freebies.

“It’s a priority for us that footy is accessible and open to everyone and that we have pathways for players with disability to develop and compete – from NAB AFL Auskick all the way to elite and being able to represent your state on the national stage.
“This will be the third consecutive year that every state and territory has fielded a mixed wheelchair AFL team, showcasing the strength and depth of the competition. In hosting a women and girls inclusion exhibition match too, we’re hoping to grow participation in this space to ensure we can create a women’s division over the coming years.
