Australia’s Alex de Minaur jumped to a career-best position of world No. 6 in the latest ATP singles rankings on the back of a strong 2024 season.
Alex de Minaur, slated to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has claimed two titles – Mexican Open in February and Libéma Open in June – and has a 36-12 record so far this year.
The 25-year-old broke into the top 10 in the tennis rankings for the first time in his career in January, becoming only the 11th player from his country to achieve it.
He is also the first Australian in 18 years to be ranked in the top 10. Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam champion, was the last to do so.
Only six Australian tennis players have ranked higher than de Minaur in the men’s singles. John Newcombe, Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt each achieved the No. 1 spot. Ken Rosewall (No. 2), Rod Laver (No. 3) and Pat Cash (No. 4) are the other three.
Alex de Minaur made it to the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros and reached the quarter-finals in the Wimbledon as well last week. However, he injured his hip during the round of 16 clash against Arthur Fils of France and was ruled out of the tournament.
The quarter-finals against Novak Djokovic would have been his first appearance in the final eight stage in six attempts at the Wimbledon Championships.
Alexei Popyrin is currently world No. 43 while Rinky Hijikata No. 64. Both will represent Australia in the men’s singles event at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin will also combine to play in the men’s doubles event.
