Alex de Minaur knocked out of US Open quarterfinals in straight sets

Alex de Minaur knocked out of US Open quarterfinals in straight sets

Alex de Minaur has lost to Great Britain’s Jack Draper in straight sets at the US Open, in an uncharacteristic performance from the Australian.

De Minaur, who was looking to make it past the quarterfinal stage at a grand slam for the first time in his career, went down 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

The Australian had been fancied to reach his maiden grand slam semifinal against the lower-ranked Draper, especially having beaten the 22-year-old in all three previous encounters.

But the world No.10 struggled to find top gear at Arthur Ashe Stadium as the Brit continued his own march through the Open draw.

It was unclear if de Minaur was fighting the hip injury that had sidelined the 25-year-old since Wimbledon.

De Minaur clutched at the leg on occasions while trying to transition in points.

Other times, he flew around centre court with signature lightning speed.

All the while Draper delivered a masterclass to end Australia’s singles interest in the final grand slam of the year.

As de Minaur’s horror unforced error count grew, the classy left-handed Brit dictated from the get-go with powerful groundstrokes, big serving and a succession of sumptuous forehand drop shots.

Draper’s reward is a first grand slam semifinal appearance on Friday against either world No.1 and reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner, or fifth-seeded 2021 US Open winner Daniil Medvedev.

Thank you and farewell

Thanks for joining me bright and early this morning!

Although it wasn’t the result we hoped for, de Minaur put up a fight and we’ll just have to wait that little bit longer to see him hold that grand slam trophy.

Have a great day and hopefully see you again when we head back to the first grand slam of 2025, the Australian Open!

It wasn’t the Demon’s day today

Spare a thought for de Minaur; it’s the fourth time he’s gone out in a major quarterfinal.

The stats tell the story of this match for de Minaur. He gave up 20 break point opportunities to Draper and only hit 21 winners.

He never seemed to hit his stride in the entirety of the match. It looks like his hip (which has been bothering him since Wimbledon) wasn’t at 100 per cent and you could see that towards the end of the third set.

But in true Alex form, he fought hard to stay in the match but ultimately couldn’t convert.

Draper was excellent in covering the ground. He had 72 per cent of points up at the net and 11 aces.

Here’s what the Brit had to say after the match:

“It’s amazing, my first match on the biggest court in the world, it’s a dream come true,” Draper says as he’s interviewed on-court by Brad Gilbert.

“I played a solid match. I feel the best fitness-wise I have in a long time, that’s where Alex has got me in the past. And I think he was struggling physically with something today.”

I’m sad for de Minaur, but hats off to Draper for playing an excellent game.

Jack Draper through to the US Open semifinals

He serves out the game with a triple match point. Sensational from the Brit.

Draper has had all the answers today.

He reaches the last four without dropping a set all fortnight and defeats de Minaur 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

His opponent will be decided later today when world No.1 and reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner and fifth-seeded 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev take the court.

We’re one game away from Draper taking the match

Draper will serve for a place in the semis.

He leads 5-2 and is showing little sympathy for his opponent…he’s been absolutely ruthless today.

Draper leads 4-2 in the third set

Draper digs himself out of danger from 15-40 to take another step towards his first grand slam semifinal.

de Minaur is hobbling now. It looks as though we’re coming towards the end of this match…

Demon not his usual self on court

What’s going on with Alex today? He’s playing a little flat. I’m not seeing the usual Demon magic 😢 – Carmen

I’m with you Carmen…

It looks as though his hip has been bothering him throughout the match.

We may have to wait a little longer to see the Demon make his first grand slam semifinal 😢

Draper almost at the finish line, leads 3-2

The Brit has broken the Aussie in the third set and now leads 3-2.

He manages to flash some spectacular forehands past his opponent.

Two unforced errors by de Minaur on serve hands Draper three more break points, and he cashes in with a powerful forehand.

I’m truly hoping that Demon magic comes out right about now…

Where can I watch the match from in Australia?

Hi Chan! 9Now is streaming the US Open, that’s what I’m watching on!

de Minaur leads 2-1 in the third

An ace down the middle is a nice way to hold serve again.

de Minaur did swipe a backwards glance to check the flight path had been filed correctly on Draper’s lob, but air traffic control was spot on.

de Minaur holds in the third set

A strong start from Alex de Minaur, still walking tall. He refuses to let this match get away from him.

He holds his first service game in the third set.

But so does Draper.

It’s 1-1.

Second set goes to Draper

Draper is one set away from a US Open semifinal!

A brief falter at the backend of the second, but Draper resets and wins the second set with a backhand volley.

Can de Minaur fight back in the third?

Draper breaks de Minaur in the second set

The Aussie poked the bear before, but Draper wasn’t having it.

de Minaur nets a forehand and the Brit will serve for a two-set advantage.

It’s 6-5.

Alex has never come back from two sets down to win a five set match.

Draper holds his serve, 5-5

That was a steady service game from the young Brit.

Serving to stay in the set, he produces a couple of massive strokes.

His coach urges him to back his ball striking skills.

de Minaur breaks Draper!!

It’s 4-4!

The Aussie refuses to succumb to Draper’s power.

Draper seems to have lost a bit of focus, and suddenly he’s love-40 down.

With a wobbly backhand, Draper wilts under pressure and de Minaur has a crucial break and hopefully a new-found momentum.

And it seems like he does. Alex manages to hold his serve without facing a break point, which is a rarity today.

It’s 5-4 to the Aussie.

Alex de Minaur holds his serve

There was a bit of back and forth in that service game.

After strutting to a love-40 lead, Draper falters after a strong spell of serving and is turned around by a leaping passing shot to pull de Minaur back into the game, 30-40.

de Minaur hands Draper the advantage, break point.

But not this time. The players level out at deuce a few times until Draper’s ball eventually goes long, allowing de Minaur to hold his serve.

It’s 4-3 in the second set.

Draper leads 4-2 in the second set

What a battle from both players!!

Draper had chances to close the game early but de Minaur hung in.

Unfortunately, Draper’s serve is just too good. He finishes the game out with an ace. That feels like a crucial hold to keep his momentum rolling.

The Brit leads 4-2.

de Minaur holds his serve, it’s 3-2 to the Brit

Hopefully this is the lift Alex is looking for.

Draper secured a break point with a ripper forehand but the Aussie simply won’t fade away.

Level at deuce, an ace gives Demon the early advantage, and this time he gets the hold quickly. A roar of ‘come on!’ as the Sydneysider heads over to his chair.

Draper leads 3-2.

Draper back in front and the physio comes out

Draper breaks again…and on comes the physio.

The British No 1 slipped slightly at the end of the first set and wants his hamstring seen to. It looks like his right-upper leg is being bandaged up.

But de Minaur also seems to be injured. He’s been signalling at his hip. The medical staff seem to be waiting nearby in the wing in case they’re needed.

Draper leads in the second set, 3-1.

Crucial hold for de Minaur in the second set

Good energy from the Aussie, which we didn’t see much of in the first set.

He holds at the start of the second set to go ahead in the match for the first time.

But Draper fights back on his service game. The leftie dropped only a single point on first serve in the opening set.

It’s 1-1.

Draper wins the first set 6-3

A double fault from Draper hands de Minaur a lifeline!

But he doesn’t convert. Draper manages to clasp the first set in 39 minutes with a ripping forehand.

Clinical tennis from the young Brit. That’s the 13th consecutive set Draper has won this tournament.
