In case you missed it, the price of the Australian passport – the world’s most expensive – was increased yet again on January 1. At $412 a pop, it’s fair to say you’ll want to make it worth every cent. Lucky for us, Aussie citizens hold one of the most powerful passports on the planet, offering visa-free travel to 113 incredible countries worldwide. But if you’re hoping to venture further off the beaten path, a bit of planning might be in order, as some countries enforce strict visa requirements for Australian travellers.
As of January 2025, Aussie passport holders need a valid visa to enter 15 countries, primarily in Asia and Africa, like Afghanistan, North Korea and Sudan. These visas must be secured from your destination’s relevant consulate or embassy before touching down.
A further 25 countries require Australian citizens to apply for a simple eVisa online before travelling, including Chile, India, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam. Meanwhile, there are 38 countries where Australian passport holders must apply for a visa on arrival, generally requiring you to fill in a form in a designated area at the airport after you land. Popular spots where Aussies must be granted an eVisa before entering include Cambodia, Indonesia, Maldives and Tanzania. You can check out the full list of countries requiring visas for Aussies below.
