As a kid growing up in Adelaide, Travis Head spent many an afternoon watching his heroes in the middle of the Adelaide Oval.
Head was in the crowd for Amazing Adelaide, when Mike Hussey and Michael Clarke guided Australia home to an unlikely victory late in the final day of the second Test of the 2006-2007 Ashes series.
“I was on the hill in the Chappell stand. Good fun, good memories. Amazing Adelaide was one as a kid when you get drawn to it,” he told 9News.
“I’m sure that’s for every kid growing up in Adelaide.”
Only a few weeks shy of his 13th birthday, Head left the ground that day inspired.
Nearly two decades on, Head is the man in the middle. Having steered Australia to victory in the finals of the World Cup and World Test Championship, he’s hoping to inspire more than just today’s kids of Adelaide.
The 30-year-old and his wife Jess welcomed their second child, Harrison, last month.
“Everyone will be (at the ground) in stages I think … Jess is going to have her work cut out trying to work out how that’s going to go,” he said.
“I’ll try and make sure I play well and get the boys back on the winners list.
“It’s exciting and it’ll be good to have them there, but hopefully we play well and it’ll be nice to have a beer in the sheds with everyone at the end of the game.”
