Those five players all featured in the Boomers’ recent warm-up matches against China.
Thybulle, who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA, was part of the Australian team that won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
He is a versatile player and fans have failed to understand why he was snubbed.
Cooks is another interesting call.
He plays under Boomers coach Brian Goorjian in the NBL and just agreed to a whopping three-year contract (the biggest in NBL history).
He was also one of Boomers’ star performers at last year’s World Cup.
There has been a mixed response from fans, but most were baffled.
“Just doesn’t make any sense (why Thybulle is not in) … great size that can defend most spots on the floor and lock up some of the worlds very best shooters. Not to mention his 3pt has only improved. Mind boggling,” one fan blasted on X (formerly Twitter).
“Geez … this is, um, interesting,” another said.
“One of the stranger decisions when it comes to a team selection of any sport. Thybulle should be in,” another said.
Former Boomers star Shane Heal agreed.
“I’m shocked that Thybulle was cut … I thought he was a critical piece to their defensive needs,” Heal said on social media.
“No Cooks or Matisse — team’s best defenders. Unbelievable …” another fan said.
Named in the 12-man team are NBA stars Josh Giddey, Josh Green, Danté Exum, Jock Landale, Duop Reath, Dyson Daniels, Patty Mills, and Joe Ingles.
Tasmania JackJumpers Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay have also been included in the squad, and so have veterans Matthew Dellavedova and Nick Kay.
The team will exhibition games Abu Dhabi next week fand then head to Paris.
Speaking on NBL Media’s The Gold Standard podcast, basketball legend Andrew Bogut said it was going to be tough for the Boomers to get a medal.
“I think realistically talking, I think the podium is going to be very hard, if we’re being honest,” Bogut said.
“I think they need a really good run and some lucky bounces.
“In these tournaments, you need a lucky bounce every now and then. You need something, a lucky quarter or someone fouls out, someone gets hurt, whatever it is on the other team, and you have a good little run there.
“But we’ve got the pool of death and people aren’t talking about that. We’ve got a pool that’s going to get two qualifiers from Europe.”
The Boomers’ first game at the Paris Olympics is scheduled for July 27.
