The Australian men’s cricket team registered its second win of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a 36-run victory over England at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday.
David Warner scored 39 off just 16 deliveries while captain Mitchell Marsh added 35 off 25 to help Australia post a total of 201/7 in the Group B match. Adam Zampa (2/28) impressed with the ball to help restrict England to a score of 165/6 in 20 overs.
Australia have now won both their Group B matches and top the table with four points.
Australia lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Travis Head and David Warner went in all guns blazing and scored 70 runs inside the first five overs.
Warner was the first to depart after getting bowled by Moeen Ali while Head lost his wicket in the same manner to Jofra Archer after scoring 34 in 18 deliveries.
Marsh played a handy knock in the middle with Glenn Maxwell, who scored 28. Marcus Stoinis provided the fireworks at the end of the innings with a 30 off 17 to propel Australia to 201/7.
England began the run-chase on a strong note. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler shared a 73-run stand and looked in good nick. However, Adam Zampa managed to dismiss both in successive overs and his spell proved to be the turning point in the match.
While Salt scored 37 off 23, English skipper Buttler added 42 runs in 28 balls. Following their dismissals, the defending world champions failed to build a strong partnership.
Pat Cummins also picked up a couple of wickets as England continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. England’s innings eventually fell 36 runs short.
Australia will face Namibia in their next T20 World Cup Group B match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday.
