Australia were too cool, calm and collected, shedding their “B team” tag, despite a batting surge from Pakistan, collecting the T20 international series on Saturday night at the SCG.
The hosts took a 13-run victory, with Spencer Johnson starring with ball in hand, taking 5-26.
But the biggest talking point of the night may as well have been spin bowler Adam Zampa’s iconic new look, as he sported a fresh bleached buzz cut in front of adoring fans.

And it seemed to have worked at the crease, as Zampa took 2-19 to crucially unravel Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, both for ducks, to bring the game back onto Australia’s terms.
Before the Aussies took to defending their total, it was Matt Short (32 off 17) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (20 off 9) who looked confident with bat in hand.
Australia looked on track to notch up more than 180 runs, but their middle order batsmen crumbled after Glenn Maxwell fell for 21 off 20.
Pakistan’s Haris Rauf was up to his old tricks, as he ripped through to take 4-22, restricting Australia to 9-147, their lowest batting score on the SCG in a T20.
However, the visitors lacked intent in their opening overs with bat in hand, as Johnson found himself on a hattrick, removing Muhammad Rizwan (16 off 26) and Salman Ali Agha (duck) in the 10th over.
A late surge off Nathan Ellis’ bowling in the 18th over from Mohammad Irfan Khan (37* off 28) didn’t panic Australia, despite the visitors hitting back-to-back boundaries to reduce their run chase to 25 off the final two overs.
A careless move and lack of communication from Sufyan Moqim saw him run out in the 19th over, as he was dismissed for a duck, before Haris Rauf was also run out with two balls to spare.
After copping criticism that they were Australia’s second rate team, Zampa shut down any suggestions that the short form players felt disrespected.
“We don’t feel like the B team here,” he said on Fox post match.
“You see these guys in Big Bash and everyone says … when they’re socring runs and taking wickets, they should be playing more for Australia and when they play more for Australia, they shouldn’t be.
“It’s great to have them out there. I wouldn’t say they’re ‘B’ cricketers at all.”
As for that new hairdo, Zampa admitted it’s his role to bring the “good energy” to the side, which is exactly what he did.
“I’m known for my funky hairdos, it’s good energy in the changerooms. I had my hoodie on for the whole bus ride here and revealed it in the changerooms and the boys got around it,” he said.
Australia has now claimed the T20 series over , but will play the third and final match in Tasmania on Monday night form 7pm (AEDT).
