‘Aussie footy’ comes to Virginia wine country

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A little bit of Australia came to Crozet this weekend.

King Family Vineyards hosted its first Aussie rules footy game on Saturday, July 13.

The Virginia Lions took on the Baltimore Dockers, both part of the United States Australian Football League.

The event welcomed all ages and people were able to sit on the sidelines and watch some Aussie pride on the field with a glass of wine.

Virginia Lions club founder and president Darren Green explains “Aussie footy” as a mix between volleyball and basketball.

“Very different to American football, rugby, soccer,” Green said. “It’s own sport it takes a lot of different skills from different sports that Americans would be familiar with.”

King Family Vineyards said they want to host more Aussie footy games in the future.

The footy teams encourage anyone to join and try out the sport.
