Aussie Jack Miller’s future becomes clearer as rider movement opens door to Aprilia

Australian Jack Miller looks a step closer to signing with Aprilia to continue his MotoGP career, with two key pieces of a complicated rider market slotting into place ahead of the resumption of the championship at the British Grand Prix in early August.

On Tuesday night AEST, second-tier Aprilia outfit Trackhouse Racing announced the re-signing of incumbent Spanish rider Raul Fernandez for the next two seasons, while news emerged elsewhere that Fernandez’s current teammate, Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira, looks destined to join the new Pramac Yamaha project for 2025.

Oliveira and Miller, both 29, have been in the frame for seats at Trackhouse and Pramac as a wild market transfer market, kicked off by Marc Marquez’s move to a factory Ducati seat for next year announced just after the Italian Grand Prix in June, has scattered the grid.

Of the top six riders in this year’s championship standings, only reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) will continue with his current team next season.

Fernandez’s deal with Trackhouse, the team owned by American motorsport entrepreneur Justin Marks, retained the 23-year-old Moto2 runner-up to Australia’s Remy Gardner three years ago for the 2025-26 seasons.

On Tuesday night AEST, Italian website gpone.com reported that Pramac, who Miller rode for from 2018-20, are set to announce Oliveira’s signature ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone (August 2-4), with 23-year-old Tony Arbolino his likely teammate as the Italian graduates to the premier class after finishing runner-up in Moto2 last year.

With Oliveira likely on the move, Miller’s only realistic opposition for the second Trackhouse Aprilia seat is American Joe Roberts, the 27-year-old Californian who sits in third place in the 2024 Moto2 rider standings after the best season of his seven-year tenure in the series.

Aprilia’s main factory team will feature an all-new line-up of ex-Ducati riders for next year, with Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi taking the places of the retiring Aleix Espargaro and the KTM-bound Maverick Vinales.
