The Newcombe Medal – awarded annually to Australia’s most outstanding elite tennis player – has been shared this year.

Matthew Ebden and Alex de Minaur were named the joint winners for 2024 at the Australian Tennis Awards on Monday evening.

It marked Ebden’s first medal win after five nominations for the prestigious award.

De Minaur, on the other hand, had taken the gong home twice before in 2018 and 2023.

Ebden, 37, had a career-best season in 2024, reaching world No. 1 in the doubles rankings.

He began his campaign with a men’s doubles triumph at the Australian Open before reaching the semis at Roland-Garros.

Teaming up with John Peers, the veteran then won men’s doubles gold at the Paris Olympics – the country’s first since 1996.

“Firstly, congratulations to Alex. Him reaching the top 10 in singles is an incredible effort,” Ebden said.

“I thought Thommo (Jordan Thompson) deserved this award probably just like the others. I couldn’t be up here without my doubles partner, Peersy (John Peers),” Ebden said.

“My wife travelling with me with a baby for two years, travelling with me for 12 years, all my coaches, mentors, everyone who’s given me advice, Davis Cup captains, I wouldn’t be here without any of you.

“It seems like one for Australia … I think nearly every nominee deserved to win this award. I’m super humbled and proud to win this award so thank you.

“We have one more really big goal to achieve and win that Davis Cup for Australia again so we’ll push for that again next year.”

De Minaur also enjoyed a career-best campaign, reaching the quarter-final stage at three consecutive grand slam tournaments – Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the French Open.

Australia’s top-ranked singles player and current world No. 9 peaked at No. 6 in July.

He also grew his tally of ATP titles to nine this year, taking out events in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Acapulco.

De Minaur was unable to attend the ceremony in person but delivered a video message from London after winning the UTS Grand Final.

“I’m so proud and happy to win the Newcombe Medal award again, and want to say how much I appreciate it, and also being able to share it with Matt,” he said.

“It’s been an incredible year for Australian tennis and I’m just so happy to be part of it. I’d like to congratulate Matt, who’s done amazing things this year, and his team. The Olympic gold medal was a highlight, as well as all the other nominees tonight.

“I’d like to thank Tennis Australia, John Newcombe and everyone who has made this possible. Let’s all fight to have an even better year in 2025.”
