Australian star Mitch Marsh has backed struggling teammate Steve Smith to turn things around at The Gabba amid growing pressure for the batting veteran to perform.
Smith’s fierce battle against Indian bowling sensation Jasprit Bumrah has shifted out of favour for the Australian, having been taken twice by his skill in the first two Tests.
Failing to surpass the 20-run mark, Smith’s horror run has dropped him outside the ICC men’s top 10 Test batting rankings for the first time since 2015.

As Australia prepare to take to the Gabba surface, questions have began to rise around whether Smith will be able to return and produce a strong innings.
The 35-year-old has a strong history with success at the Gabba, recording three Test centuries and finishing 91 not out against the West Indies.
But of the top seven batters in Australia’s order, Marsh is the only player not to be dismissed by Bumrah.
“Oh, it’s coming,” Marsh, laughing, told reporters when asked how he manages to keep his clean record against the Indian star.
Marsh dismissed any reason for the Australian team to be worried about Smith’s recent run in the Test format, insisting his past records are evidence enough of his talent.
“He doesn’t have to do anything to show me the real Steve Smith,” Marsh said.
“We know that he is one of our best players ever, he is class. I’m certainly backing him to get us a few runs.
“I’m probably not in the position to be telling Steve Smith what he needs to work on.
“He has scored a lot of runs for Australia. We know certainly at times when we’ve needed him that he always seems to step up. I have full faith in Smudge.
“We are a good side and we were able to bounce back, and India are a good side as well.,” he continued.
“We expect them to bounce back. I think in these big series you know that is going to happen.
“We are really focused on playing our style this week and hopefully going two up in the Wseries.”
While others in Australia’s batting order look to make slight changes to their approach, Marsh remains sure his strategy against Bumrah will be no different.
“I think if you look down the lineups of both teams there are world class bowlers everywhere,” said Marsh.
“We know (Bumrah) is, as of right now, the best bowler in the world.
“I think its just about getting yourself up for that challenge, it is international cricket.
“I think you want to take the best in the world on – that’s certainly my mentality.
“Each batter has their own plans and as a batting unit, we back each others plans.
“I look forward to getting the opportunity to face him again.”
