Aussie teen stars amid ‘whirlwind’ NBA rookie season

With several key stars sidelined in the Indiana Pacers injury ward, Aussie rookie Johnny Furphy was given his chance to make a statement – and that he did.

The 19-year-old recorded a career-high points score of 12, sinking four three-pointers and seven rebounds in his 25-minute feature in a 99-90 loss against Ben Simmons’ Nets.

Managing three triples in the third term alone, Furphy looked comfortable on the court as he plead his case to become the next offensive weapon on the team.

Furphy’s time on the court has been limited to an average of eight minutes per game as he continues to manage an ankle injury.

The teen star was forced to miss one match following the Pacers 115-103 victory over the Wizards as he had re-injured his ankle, but recovered in time for the Nets clash.

The lingering injury battle has yet to prevent him from taking his chance at gaining more minutes on the big stage, but Australia star Bec Allen fears if not correctly supported, his chances of success could be delayed.

“A lot has changed, hasn’t it?” she said on NBA Australia’s Courtside Huddle.

“I think he’s just gotten that opportunity, he’s in an Indiana Pacers that have been riddled with injury this whole season.

“He finally got his opportunity, and now he’s been hit with an ankle injury. That’s when he has to make sure he really leans on his support network throughout all that.

“I feel for him in that, that plays into the whirlwind of emotion, so it’s just trying not to get too high or too low, and going through that process and that journey.

“Obviously, for him to be getting those minutes prior, it means that there’s a bit of trust given to him from the coaching staff.

“He has to hold on to that and just know his time is going to come again.”

The Nets victory was one of the better performances by Furphy’s Aussie rival, Simmons, who was a vital player in the defensive strategy for his team.

Simmons sunk three-of-three from the field against the Pacers, with seven rebounds, nine assists and two steals assisting the Nets to victory.

The 28-year-old did not shy away from putting notice on Furphy, throwing a crosscourt assist to Day’Ron Sharpe in front of the teen at the three-point line to add to the Nets point score.

“This is what I do,” Simmons said about the pass post-match.

“I see the floor and try to get my teammates involved and make the right play.”

Simmons credited the late onslaught and success to the efforts of his side’s defence.

“It’s the NBA, no game is easy,” he said.

“You take it a day at a time and a game at a time, keep pushing and fighting.”
