Aussies make all-time Olympic history, leave hosts in the dust with gold rush — Medal Tally live

Australia has achieved its greatest ever gold medal haul with four days of competition still to come at the Paris Olympics.

A stunning four gold-medal haul on Day 12 has moved Australia to 18 for the event, putting the nation comfortably ahead of hosts Paris in third place.

It surpassed the 17 gold won in both Tokyo three years ago and Athens 2004.

Matt Wearn made history on Day 12 as he won Australia its 15th gold medal of the Paris Games going back-to-back in the men’s dinghy. Keegan Palmer then made it 16 with a stunning run in the men’s park skateboarding final.

Then the quartet of Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, Conor Leahy and Kelland O’Brien delivered Australia a first win in the men’s team pursuit since Athens 2004.

And then capping it all off, Nina Kennedy won gold in the women’s pole vault, Australia’s first women’s field gold in history.

It comes after the sole gold medal for Australia on Day 11 was provided by 14-year-old Arisa Trew in the women’s park skateboarding final.

USA sit atop the tally with 27 gold, level with China, and Australia are now well placed to match their best ever standing of third on the medal tally at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
