Amid growing military tensions with China, the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Canberra is limiting research collaborations with Beijing. The university has also ended visits from Chinese academics to its Canberra campus, reported ABC News. However, UNSW Sydney campus is not affected by the decision to restrict research collaborations with China. UNSW Sydney campus will offer PhD scholarships to Dongguan University in Guangdong province, maintaining its ties with Chinese academic institutions. Since 1980s, UNSW has been offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses to ADFA cadets and Defence civilians. UNSW Canberra unique position within the Australian Defence Force Academy necessitates stringent oversight, ABC News reported. Meanwhile, Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson welcomed the decision, urged further scrutiny of staff, calling for the removal of academic ties with Chinese govt. Notably, the move follows concerns over defence export rules for AUKUS partners which threaten strict penalties for unauthorized collaborations with non-US/UK researchers.
