Australia have qualified for the final eight at the Twenty20 World Cup by posting a comprehensive nine-wicket defeat of Namibia in Antigua.
After his side won the toss, Adam Zampa (4-12) was again the star attraction as Australia skittled Namibia for only 72 runs – the lowest total any side has ever posted in a T20I against Australia.
From there, Travis Head (34 not out) top-scored with the bat to ensure Australia (74-1) would reach Namibia’s total in the sixth over, Mitch Marsh (18 not out) hitting the winning runs for four past deep extra cover.
Zampa’s final wicket, when he bowled Bernard Scholtz through the gate, made him the first Australian man to take 100 wickets in the shortest format of the international game.
“Just trying to do my thing, mate,” said Zampa, the player of the match. “We’re happy, it’s the first step in trying to take the trophy home but a long way to go.”
Australia will now finish in the top two of Group B, meaning they will play in the tournament’s Super Eight stage regardless of the result of Sunday’s final group-stage match against Scotland.
Finish top-two in their Super Eight group and the 2021 champions will progress to the knockout semi-finals.
