The Australian women’s basketball team secured a Paris 2024 quota by winning the FIBA 3×3 Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2 in Utsunomiya, Japan on Sunday.
The Gangurrus women, who won the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup title earlier this year, began the tournament on a disappointing note on Friday and lost their Pool B opener against the Netherlands.
The sixth-seeded team, however, bounced right back on Saturday to win their remaining group matches against Kenya and powerhouses Canada. The two wins saw the Australian women’s 3×3 basketball team top Pool B and qualify for the semi-finals.
Up against eighth-seeds Brazil in the top four, the Gangurrus eked out a narrow 18-16 win propelled by Alex Wilson and Marena Whittle, who combined for 13 points.
The two stepped up again in the final to upset second seeds Canada 19-16 and pocketed the solitary 3×3 basketball quota available from the Utsunomiya meet.
