Australian fashion icon Maggie Tabberer dies aged 87

Australian fashion icon Maggie Tabberer has died aged 87.

Maggie’s daughter, Amanda Tabberer, confirmed the news via social media on Friday.

“This morning we lost our beautiful mother and Nanna,” she wrote.

“She was an icon in every sense of the word and we will miss her dearly … along with the rest of Australia.

“Rest in peace Nanna. We love you to bits forever.”

Tabberer was first discovered by a photographer in Melbourne when she was 23, and was then named Australia’s Model of the Year in 1960.

After working as a model, Tabberer quickly rose to stardom as a TV personality, and worked extensively in publishing and television.

She went on to be fashion editor for the Australian Women’s Weekly for 15 years.

She won two Gold Logies in 1970 and 1971 when she was voted Most Popular Female Personality.

Australian fashion and entertainment industry identities have flooded to social media to share tributes for the fashion icon.

“I just can’t believe it,” journalist and media commentator Melissa Hoyer said.

“The greatest of all time. My icon — the stories, the interviews, the influence, the innate style and class act of an extraordinary woman.

“I am so so so sorry to read this Amanda and Brookie. Sending every every ounce of love. RIP. Legend.”

Former magazine editor and interior designer Neale Whitaker remembered Maggie as an “icon”.

“Very sad … sending love to you and your family,” he wrote.

TV personality Chyka Keebaugh added: “I am so sad to hear this awful news … I always loved her style and love of everything. Sending all my love to you all.”
