The future of Australian Fashion Week is secure, here’s what we know.
After a month of uncertainty, it’s been confirmed that Australian Fashion Week is set to return for 2025.
The Australian Fashion Council (AFC) will produce the event in collaboration with Destination NSW, the New South Wales government’s tourism and major events agency. With newly secured government funding, it’s set to take place at Carriageworks in Sydney from May 12 to 16.
The news comes after the November announcement that IMG would withdraw its backing for the event, putting the future of Australian Fashion Week in limbo.
Since then, designers, media partners and those in the industry have shown their support for the event. This culminated with a public gathering at the Sydney Opera House alongside members of The Australian Fashion Council, calling on government support.
“The industry has come together swiftly, pulling together its great expertise, to ensure that Fashion Week can go ahead in 2025,” Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, and Minister for Jobs and Tourism John Graham said.
Australian Fashion Council CEO Jaana Quaintance-James, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the value of an industry-led Fashion Week.
“Joining with Destination NSW and drawing on the expertise of our industry partners, we can take meaningful steps towards making Fashion Week more impactful for designers, and the broader creative economy.”
A major event in the local fashion calendar, Australian Fashion Week has long been heralded as a platform for showcasing Australian talent at an international level. “It puts our designers, photographers, models, stylists and influencers on a world stage,” Alex Schuman, chief executive officer of Carla Zampatti, said.
Australian Fashion Week founder, Simon Lock, is also set to play a crucial role in delivering the event alongside both emerging and established designers, media partners and more. Further industry consultation will continue, with the announcement of the full program to take place in 2025.
