Kicking off on August 1, the golf tournament at this year’s Olympic Games is set to be an interesting one! Golf was first featured in the Olympics in 1900 and 1904, however, the sport didn’t return for over 100 years.
Golf later rejoined the Olympics for Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 and will be back for Paris 2024 with the world’s best golfers swinging for the gold medal yet again.
The field for the Olympic Games in Paris is limited to 60 male and 60 female golfers based on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). The final rankings ahead of Paris 2024 have been officially determined, including the Australian Olympic golf team.
The Olympic ranking is based on the world ranking and qualification is determined by your rank. As mentioned, the field for the Olympic Games in Paris is limited to 60 male and 60 female golfers – the top 15 players on the OWGR automatically qualify for the Olympics, with a maximum of four players per country.
After the top 15, the Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR) consists of up to the top two eligible players for each country, however, that country must not already have at least two players in the top 15.
Australia’s representatives for the golf tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics are Minjee Lee, Min Woo Lee, Jason Day, and Hannah Green.
Minjee Lee and Min Woo Lee will make history at this year’s Olympics as the first siblings to compete in Olympic golf for Australia.
Minjee Lee also will become the first Australian golfer to compete at three Olympics.
Jason Day, the world No. 24, was placed 14th in the OGR after the men’s cut-off date ended while Min Woo Lee was 36th.
He had previously qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, however, he, unfortunately, had to opt out due to family reasons at the time.
Hannah Green previously competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she finished tied for fifth in the women’s golf tournament.
Green is a five-time LPGA winner and recently jumped 10 places to go from No. 18 to world No. 8 in the recently released Women’s World Golf Rankings. This is her career-best ranking.
