Australian Open 2024 badminton: How to watch live in Australia

The Australian Open 2024 badminton BWF Super 500 tournament will start at the State Sports Centre in Sydney on Tuesday.

There will be a heavy presence of Australian badminton players in their home stop of the BWF World Tour 2024. All three Paris 2024 Olympics-bound Aussie shuttlers – Tiffany Ho, Angela Yu and Setyana Mapasa – will be seen in action in Sydney.

Angela Yu and Setyana Mapasa, who will pair up for the women’s doubles competition at Paris 2024, are the fourth seeds for the Australian Open.

The Australian pair, who are also the Oceania champions, recently had a productive outing at the Singapore Open and managed to stretch the world No. 3 Japanese pair of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida to three games before suffering a narrow defeat in their round of 16 match.

Tiffany Ho, meanwhile, will face compatriot Sydney Tjonadi in the first round of women’s singles. Kai Qi (Bernice) Teoh is the only other local player in the women’s singles main draw at the Australian Open 2024.

Ricky Tang, 171st in the world badminton rankings, will be the lone Aussie in the men’s singles main draw but may get company through the qualifiers. Ricky Tang plays India’s Sameer Verma in the opening round.

The pair of Pramudya Kusumawardana and Andika Ramadiansyah, seeded sixth in the men’s doubles main draw, will also be in focus. Kusumawardana represented Indonesia till last year and is a former world No. 11 and Asian champion.

Now a Sydney resident, Kusumawardana will be playing his first BWF tournament as an Australian and will pair up with Ramadiansyah, who also made a similar transition in 2021.

Ramadiansyah will also pair up with Nozomi Shimizu for the mixed doubles competition and will face former Indonesian teammates Jafar Hidayatullah and Aisyah Salsabila Putri Pranata in the first round.

The Australian Open 2024 is the sixteenth tournament of the BWF World Tour 2024 badminton season.

No Aussie shuttler has won the Australian Open title since Huang Chia-chi and Tang Hetian were crowned the women’s doubles champions in 2009.
