Australian teenage prodigies Emerson Jones and Maya Joint have both copped nightmare first round matches at Australian Open 2025.

The two Aussie women will play against top 10 stars in the arguably the toughest initiation to their first main draws at Melbourne Park.

Jones, 16, will take on Wimbledon 2022 champion and Australian Open 2023 finalist Elena Rybakina first up.

Joint, 18, has been paired against US Open 2024 finalist Jessica Pegula, who has been ranked as high as no.3 in the world.

There were several other tasty first-round matches including Coco Gauff copping former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.

The winner of the last two Australian Opens – Aryna Sabalenka – has a tricky match first up against US Open 2017 champion Sloane Stephens.

Another double Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka will lock horns with Caroline Garcia, in a rematch of their opening round match from last year.

World no.2 Iga Swiatek also has a tricky encounter versus experienced Czech player Katerina Siniakova.
