On Sunday, Cricket Australia confirmed the uncapped Inglis had been released from the national squad for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to a “low-grade calf strain” he sustained while fielding on day two of the Melbourne Test.
The 29-year-old is expected to recover before Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka, which commences in late January, but the injury setback put his BBL campaign in jeopardy. He played two matches for the Scorchers last week between the third and fourth Tests against India, compiling 53 runs at 26.50.
If required, England gloveman Matthew Hurst will presumably continue donning the gloves for the Scorchers in Inglis’ absence.
Inglis’ injury leaves Australia without a spare batter for the fifth Test in Sydney, opening the door for axed opener Nathan McSweeney to return to the national set-up. However, Victorian batter Peter Handscomb, who could make his Test return during the Sri Lanka tour, also looms as a candidate.
All-rounders Beau Webster and Sean Abbott remain Australia’s squad ahead of next week’s New Year’s Test, while both have a chance of receiving their baggy greens pending Mitchell Marsh’s form and Mitchell Starc’s fitness.
