Australia had two medal contenders in the Olympic women’s high jump final on Monday morning (AEST).
Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers and former world champion Eleanor Patterson were in action at the Stade de France, with heavy favourite Yaroslava Mahuchikh potentially in their way.
Here’s how the Aussie pair got on.

It was a great showing from the Australian duo in the women’s high jump final, with Olyslagers securing silver and Patterson snagging bronze.
Olyslagers looked right at home early on, clearing her three first jumps (1.91m, 1.95m and 1.98m) in three attempts.
This left her in a duel with Ukraine’s Mahuchikh for the gold medal.
Olyslagers was unsuccessful with her first two jumps at the 2.00m mark, but on her last attempt, with the whole stadium watching, she cleared the bar to extend the final.
However, Mahuchikh making 2.00m on her first attempt meant the 27-year-old Aussie had to clear 2.02m to have a chance of winning gold due to tiebreak rules.
Both failed their first pair of attempts before Olyslagers’ unsuccessful final jump saw the Ukrainian guaranteed gold.
Mahuchikh had a single, last crack at 2.04m – which she was permitted to do – but couldn’t clear the bar.

Patterson cleared her first three heights (1.86m, 1.91m and 1.95m) in as many attempts, but couldn’t get it done at 1.98m.
However, with only two athletes remaining at the time of her elimination, the bronze medal came down to a tiebreaker.
It was decided by each athlete’s number of attempts at 1.95m, which meant Patterson (one attempt) shared the medal with Iryna Gerashchenko.
