New Delhi: Mitchell Marsh was named as Australia’s full-time T20I skipper as the Kangaroos announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 on May 1. Marsh pulled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 due to an injury. It’s believed that he will be fit for the upcoming showpiece event as he has been named as leader of the Aussie setup for event beginning from June 2.
In a a conversation with the reporters, Marsh said that he expects to regain full fitness in next two weeks time and will hopefully be ready by the World Cup, which is four weeks away. Australia named a very strong squad for the big ticket event but lot will depend on Marsh, who has been in terrific form in almost all the formats over the past two years.
“If we had to play tomorrow, I’d be in a bit of trouble,” the 32-year-old said. “Still a couple of weeks away from full fitness. The timing probably sits perfectly, barring no setbacks. I’ll be on the plane, ready to go,” Marsh told the reporters in Australia.
“The hammy is good, it’s coming along really well. It’s pretty much exactly where we want it to be. It’s one of those things. Just got to get it right over the next three weeks and get on the plane,” he further added.
Australia chief selector George Bailey had said that the team needed to proceed with caution in respect to Marsh’s gradual workload build up.
“Marsh is coming along pretty well, I think he starts batting again pretty shortly, obviously the build to bowling is probably going to look a little bit different, but again we’ve got some flexibility there. That will build in time, but he’ll certainly be fit and firing to play,” Bailey said.
