Australia’s Visa program sparks frenzy: 40,000 Indians apply for 1,000 available spots – Jobs and Career News

Australia’s new Working Holiday Maker visa program has generated overwhelming interest in India, with around 40,000 applications submitted within just two weeks for a mere 1,000 available spots, as revealed by Australian Assistant Minister for Immigration, Matt Thistlethwaite.

Speaking at the launch event for the program in New Delhi, Thistlethwaite highlighted how this initiative will strengthen the growing ties between India and Australia by allowing young Indians aged 18 to 30 to live, work, and study in Australia for up to a year.

“The great thing about the Working Holiday Maker visa is that there are no restrictions on the jobs you can do,” Thistlethwaite remarked. “Till now, 40,000 applications have been received for the 1,000 visa spots.” The program, which opened for applications on October 1, 2024, will close by the end of the month. Once the registration period ends, a random ballot system will select successful applicants who will be able to start their journey in Australia by early 2025.

A Unique Opportunity for Young Indians

Thistlethwaite pointed out that the visa offers young Indians a chance to gain invaluable experience working across various sectors in Australia, while also soaking in the country’s rich culture. He noted that many participants are expected to work in hospitality and agriculture, though they have the freedom to explore other industries and even take short courses to improve skills like English proficiency.

The program also acts as a gateway for future opportunities. “This visa offers young Indians a taste of what life in Australia is like,” Thistlethwaite said. He suggested that those who experience life in Australia through this visa could be motivated to return later on student or skilled worker visas, further expanding their horizons.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The Working Holiday Maker visa is part of a broader push to enhance bilateral relations between Australia and India, a relationship that has been steadily deepening in recent years. Thistlethwaite credited the partnership between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for facilitating initiatives like this visa program. “The Australian Prime Minister used his experience and friendship with the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to ensure improved and increased opportunities for young people from both communities to experience each other’s cultures,” he explained.

The visa initiative reflects the larger framework established under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), which officially made India the 50th country to join Australia’s Working Holiday Maker partner program. As per this agreement, Australia will grant 1,000 first Work and Holiday visas each year to eligible Indian citizens aged between 18 and 30.

The Visa Ballot Process

The application process, open from October 1 to October 31, 2024, is conducted through a ballot system, where eligible Indian passport holders can register online. Between October 14, 2024, and April 30, 2025, random selections will be made from the registered pool, with successful candidates being notified by email. Those chosen will then be able to apply for their first Work and Holiday visa, allowing them to work and study in Australia for up to 12 months.

Officials also confirmed that this visa program will be renewed each year, providing a continuous opportunity for young Indians to live, work, and experience life in Australia. It is expected to become a significant pillar of cultural exchange and cooperation between the two nations.
