Bevan in running for men’s One-Day Cup trophy | Cricket NSW

NSW great Michael Bevan has made the shortlist for the naming of the men’s One-Day Cup trophy after Australian cricket fans had their say.

Fan engagement and feedback over the past month has clearly separated three players from the rest: Bevan, Victorian Dean Jones and Queenslander Andrew Symonds.

Thousands of passionate cricket supporters gave their opinion about whose name should be on the trophy in perpetuity, with more than 10,000 responses on Cricket Australia’s social media channels and more than 8,000 fans voting in an online poll on cricket.com.au.

The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame committee, led by Chair Peter King, has kindly agreed to assess the credentials of the three players shortlisted before a recommendation is provided to the CA Board.

In the coming days CA’s digital channels will feature articles and highlight packages championing the careers of Bevan, Jones and Symonds and encourage fans to engage in further discussion in the lead up to the decision.

Key criteria for the award include:

  • An elite record in the Men’s One-Day Domestic competition.
  • A top performer at international level for Australia in Men’s One-Day cricket.
  • A player who is synonymous with the 50-over format – i.e. has had a major impact on the game, including through performance and inspiring evolution in the way the format is played.

Fans can watch the entire domestic summer of cricket, including the One-Day Cup, live on Kayo Sports, cricket.com.au and the CA Live app.

Cricket NSW Chief of Cricket Performance Greg Mail said there was no one more fitting to have the One-Day Cup named in their honour than Bevan.

“Michael Bevan is an icon of Australian cricket, probably most famously in the One-Day game and we would fully support this trophy being named after him,” Mail said.

“All three of the shortlisted candidates had wonderful careers, but for us, considering the incredible impact Bevo had on cricket in NSW and Australia, including lifting the trophy six times himself, he is our pick.

“We have named the NSW One-Day Player of the Year award after Michael, and this would be another nod to his great career.”

Cricket NSW encourages all fans to get onto the Cricket Australia social media channels and leave their comments of support for Michael Bevan.
