Basketball Australia has named a youthful, NBL heavy Australia Select team that will travel to Japan for the 2024 Nissay Cup on June 22 and 23.
The group will be led by Breakers guard Mitch McCarron, Hawks center Sam Froling and Bullets guard Mitch Norton, with a host of collegiate NBL talent set to star in the games in Hokkaido.
Next Stars Alex Toohey and Rocco Zikarsky lead an exciting NBL24 contingent that also includes Ben Henshall and Kyle Bowen, while incoming NBL rookies Tyler Robertson, Elijah Pepper and Keli Leaupepe have also been selected.
College talents Alex Condon and Reyne Smith round out the roster.
Melbourne United’s Dean Vickerman has been named as head coach.
A select group from the side will also then link up with Australia’s Olympic squad as part of the preparations for Paris 2024.
Basketball Australia’s EGM of High Performance Jason Smith says the series will help continue to open avenues to immerse some of Australia’s best young talent into the Boomers program.
“This tour of Asia helps bring us a broader group across our senior teams and reinforce they are part of the whole,” Smith said.
“Our aspiration continues in providing a multi-faceted system where every player feels supported in their journey as an Australian basketball. This starts from their days as a junior representative onto the biggest stages in the world.
“We remain in communication with all of our players throughout the process and their insights and expectations play an essential part in their development. We are committed to providing as much opportunity as we can to invest in the improvement of our future.
College talents and NBA Draft hopefuls Tyrese Proctor and Johnny Furphy were also in the mix for selection, but were unable to join the team due to prior commitments in the USA.
