The 53-year-old, who currently heads the Australian Cricketers’ Association, had been considered a frontrunner for the Cricket Australia chief executive role soon to be vacated by Nick Hockley, with the body confirming Greenberg’s appointment on Tuesday afternoon.
Greenberg, who previously served as the Canterbury Bulldogs boss and in a senior role at Stadium Australia, said he is excited by the prospect of leading cricket through what he described as an exciting “growth phase”.
Greenberg, who played First Grade cricket for Randwick, said he had loved cricket since his boyhood and could not wait to take the reins at CA after Hockley’s departure in March.
“This is an extremely exciting time for cricket with the rapid growth of the game across the globe creating fantastic opportunities, while also presenting some challenges to ensure Australian cricket retains its position at the very peak of the game,” he said.
“Thanks to the work of the current administration the game has strong fundamentals in place. I want to ensure we build on this momentum so Australian cricket continues to thrive — from local parks to the nation’s biggest stadiums.
“I’m grateful to all those at the Australian Cricketers’ Association where we formed positive and productive partnerships across the game, and I look forward to continuing and enriching these relationships for the betterment of cricket.”
Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird said Greenberg had a track record for growth in the roles he has previously filled, pointing to the success the NRL has enjoyed with positioning State of Origin matches in Melbourne as a prime example of his innovation.
He emerged as the successful from a global search run by the recruitment firm Spencer Stuart, with Greenberg effectively confirmed as the preferred candidate on the weekend. Cricket Australia informed the chairs of the nation’s state cricket bodies on Monday.
“Todd will bring enormous experience to the role from his time leading the National Rugby League and his current position as CEO of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, as well as his time in club and stadium management,” Baird said.
“We are entering a period of great opportunity and the recruitment panel and CA Board was enormously impressed by Todd’s passion for cricket and his vision to build on the achievements of the past few years and continue the game’s growth.
“I would like to thank Nick Hockley who will leave the game in a position of great strength at the end of the season with important foundations including our broadcast rights deal, MOU and seven-year content strategy in place.”

Hockley, who was based in Sydney but became a frequent visitor to Melbourne as a result of his promotion, assumed the role on a full-time basis after the departure of Kevin Roberts during the first year of the pandemic in 2020.
Greenberg, who also helped drive the development of the NRLW, was active in his role with the ACA and was present on several overseas tours, where it is understood he sought to gather a broader understanding of the global forces involved with cricket.
