Carlos Alcaraz Eyeing Career Slam At Australian Open: ‘My Main Goal’ For The Season

Carlos Alcaraz took to the practice courts at the Australian Open Monday for the first time this year as he bids to win the one Grand Slam title that has eluded him in his young career.

The 21-year-old world No. 3 already owns titles at Roland Garros (2024), Wimbledon (2023 and 2024) and the U.S. Open (2022), and is seeking to become the youngest player in history to achieve the career Grand Slam. That record currently belongs to his idol and former Olympic doubles partner, Rafael Nadal, who did it at 24 and retired at the end of last year.

The Australian Open runs Jan. 11-26.

“I’m a very ambitious person and I want to win the Australian Open to complete my Grand Slam record,” Nadal told reporters in Spain last month, per Marca. “I want 2025 to be an even more exciting year. Let’s just say I want more. Australia is what I want to get tattooed, even though my dad doesn’t like it very much. To be champion there is my main goal for next season.”

Alcaraz’s best performance in Melbourne came last year when he reached the quarterfinals, losing to Alexander Zverev in four sets.

The draw is set for Thursday and Alcaraz will learn whether world No. 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner and/or 24-time major champ Novak Djokovic is in his half of the draw.

Alcaraz did not play any warm-up tournaments ahead of Melbourne.

“This year has been marked by ups and downs, but it has remained positive,” he said last month. “I’m still emotional when I watch the videos of Roland Garros and Wimbledon. I’m starting a hard month of training but being at home for Christmas and New Year’s Eve is wonderful and gives me a break.”
