Carlos Alcaraz will seek his first Australian Open title in the upcoming weeks. The young Spaniard will train at Rod Laver Arena on Monday afternoon. Carlos will hit the court alongside his coeval, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
The four-time Major winner will seek a Career Grand Slam in Melbourne, trying to become the youngest player with that honor. Alcaraz opted to skip the opening weeks of the season and train at home in Alicante. Thus, he will enter the Australian Open without official matches in his legs.
The 21-year-old targeted the Australian Open as his main goal in 2025, feeling eager to seek the missing Major title. Carlos has yet to reach the last four in Melbourne, and he sees the upcoming event as a perfect opportunity to break new ground.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard competed in Brisbane and demonstrated his booming serve again! The Frenchman reached the semi-final and fell to Reilly Opelka in straight sets. Alongside Holger Rune, Alcaraz and Mpetshi Perricard are the most prominent players of the 2003 generation.
Carlos and Giovanni played for the first time in October last year in the first round of the ATP 500 event in Beijing. The favorite scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory in an hour and 21 minutes, taking 11 points more and controlling the scoreboard against a dangerous rival.
Alcaraz played against three break points and defended them, keeping the pressure on the other side. He generated two break points and converted them, stealing Mpetshi Perricard’s serve once in each set and moving over the top.
Giovanni landed in 44% of the first serve and plagued his chances. The giant server lost serve in the early stages of each set and failed to erase the deficit and extend the battle. The Frenchman could not find the rhythm behind the second serve.
He also missed his chances in the closing stages of the opening set, which could have made the encounter more interesting. The Spaniard survived one challenging service game and controlled everything in the remaining ones.
Alcaraz defended the second serve in style and landed 18 winners and 15 unforced errors. Carlos followed Giovanni’s pace in service winners and mixed up his game with 20 rushings to the net.
