Clarke’s huge call as teenage star bolts into Test mix

Clarke’s huge call as teenage star bolts into Test mix

Teenage star Sam Konstas has skyrocketed into Australian conversations after scoring another century for NSW in their Sheffield Shield opener.

The 19-year-old reached triple-figures for the first time earlier this week, producing a tremendous innings of 152 from 241 balls against South Australia.

Konstas has now backed it up with another ton, putting his side in a commanding position at the end of day three against the Redbacks, bringing up the milestone from 220 deliveries with a massive six over cow-corner.

His century did come with a pretty heavy slice of luck however as Test wicket-keeper Alex Carey shelled a catch with Konstas yet to get off the mark on Thursday.

In the process, Konstas became the youngest player to score centuries in both innings of a Shield match since the country’s all-time leading runscorer, Ricky Ponting.

This week has cemented Konstas as one of the best young talents in the country and caps off an incredible 12-month span for the Sutherland product.

Konstas made his first-class debut last November, before featuring in Australia’s successful U19s World Cup tournament earlier this year.

While rushing him straight into the Test side this summer may seem a little far-fetched, there’s reason to believe Konstas is ready to become part of the wider group.

Speaking on Sky Sports Radio, former captain Michael Clarke heaped praise on the prodigy and believes national selectors should be keeping a close eye on him.

“You’d be close to being in the next squad, the next Australian touring party … certainly as an opening batsman,” Clarke said.

“It was a good wicket, they’re not the greatest attack, but this kid is a star. He’s been successful at junior level, he’s got all the shots, he’s got a good technique.

“Batting at the top of the order in Shield cricket, international cricket, is one of the hardest jobs as a cricketer, and he took it on.

“It’s a start, it’s baby steps, but keep an eye out for Sam. He’s extremely talented, has a great work ethic and he’s batting in a position where we’re having conversations around who’s the person to replace David Warner.”

The debate around the opening spot in the Australian lineup has been a hot topic throughout the year, with Steve Smith moving up from No.4 to replace David Warner.

But there are still question marks over Smith’s future in the role, while his partner Usman Khawaja isn’t expected to be around the international stage for much longer.

NSW selector Geoff Lawson admits Konstas could be a player who factors into discussions at the end of the five-game series against India.

“He’s now got an asterisk next to his name, there’s no doubt about that,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“The change is coming and it’s nice to be a young man with some ability at the moment. Sam’s definitely on that train ride, it just depends which carriage he’s in at the moment.

“You watch what people do off the ball … and he’s just spot-on with the way he moved, the way he was in position, the way he expected things to happen.

“This kid just has a natural flair for the game, he understands it, and he’s 19-years-old. That usually means you will use your opportunity.”

Konstas has been mentored by former Test opener Shane Watson throughout his teenage years, with the pair coming together at Sutherland.
