Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz both rank how they feel about their own games out of 10 going into the Australian Open

Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz both rank how they feel about their own games out of 10 going into the Australian Open

Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz were the heroes for the USA as they beat Poland in the 2025 United Cup final.

Fans criticised Danielle Collins for her Iga Swiatek handshake before the meeting in Sydney, where Poland were looking to recover from losing last year’s final.

Swiatek played at that 2024 United Cup, with her nation suffering final heartache against Germany, losing 2-1.

She was once again heavily involved this time around, along with compatriot Hubert Hurkacz, but neither could emerge victorious.

Gauff edged past Swiatek in the opener, with Fritz then beating Hurkacz to secure a second United Cup title for the USA.

They topped Group A in Perth before knockout wins against China and the Czech Republic, both of which ended 3-0 in their favour.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, both Gauff and Fritz ranked their games out of 10 and discussed the areas they could improve upon as the Australian Open nears.

“I’d say I’m at, like a 7, I think,” said Fritz. “I think I’m serving really, really well. I’m really happy with how I’m serving. So I’d say that’s a 9, 9.5.

“But I’d say the rest of the game I think can improve a bit. Just in that last match today, I think I moved the best I have moved all week, so I think that’s an improvement. I think normally for me when I play more matches, I start to move a bit better the more I play.

“But yeah, I think just groundstrokes, hitting the ball, returning, there are some things I could do a bit better, but I am really happy with how I’m serving.”

Gauff meanwhile responded: “I’d say for me kind of the opposite, like 7 or 8. I definitely think I could have served better, I felt like.

“Today I served decently well, but I do think I could serve better. Off the ground today I felt really good, like a 9 or 10. In my last matches, not that great.

“I think I can get a little bit more aggressive. Today I was definitely aggressive on both wings. I did return well.

“Yeah, in the previous matches I would say I could be more aggressive, but today I did that, so I’m coming out and being aggressive. I had to run.

“Obviously when you play Iga, you have to run, but obviously I’m not only going to be doing that today. Yeah, I think I can just play a little more aggressive.”

Coco Gauff wins MVP award after stunning United Cup

Gauff and Fritz are very much flying the flag for the USA on the WTA and ATP tours, with both in formidable form on the court.

The former is behind only Aryna Sabalenka and Swiatek in the rankings, with the latter behind only Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz.

It was, however, Gauff who left the biggest impression on the tournament, with the 20-year-old securing the MVP award.

Remarkably, the WTA number three won all seven of her singles and doubles matches on her United Cup debut.

Moreover, she became the youngest player to win three consecutive matches against the WTA top two since Daria Kasatkina in 2017 after beating Swiatek, as per OptaAce.
