The AUKUS debate has reignited over the past few weeks and submarines are back in the political and public consciousness. AUKUS has meant that Australians are talking about naval platforms and capabilities to an extent that would have been remarkable even three years ago.
The debate has, however, been polarised, generating much heat, but little light. AUKUS tends to be presented as either a wonderful nation-building project and an example of Australia finally stepping up to the plate, or as a looming national disaster likely to lead us into a catastrophic war. The reality, however, is far messier but worth exploring as we look forward.
