Collingwood congratulates 2010 Premiership player Dane Swan who has tonight been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Taken from the Calder Canons at pick 58 in the 2001 National Draft, Swan went on to play a total of 258 in the black and white across a 15-year career.

Despite not being the typical AFL athlete, ‘Swanny’ became known as one of the most prolific midfielders to play the game. The now 40-year-old was crowned as the Brownlow Medallist in 2011, has three Copeland Trophies (2008, 2009, 2010), and also has five All-Australian blazers (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013).

Not only was he admired for his footy smarts and running ability, but the midfielder was also unstoppable around the contest with his barrel-chested strength and speed proving an irresistible force.

Between 2009-2012 he was arguably the best midfielder in the game, averaging over 30 possessions a match. He was also dangerous around goals, finishing his career with a total of 211.

Following 13 seasons, Swan’s career came to an end in 2016 due to a serious foot injury.

Away from the statistics and his achievements, the Magpie Army will forever admire Swan for his laid-back approach to football and to life. He epitomised an earlier era where it was still possible to play football and enjoy life away from it.
