Australian men’s basketball team player Dante Exum suffered a dislocated finger in the Boomers’ warm-up match against France on Sunday. However, the point guard is expected to recover from the setback and feature at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Exum, 29, was taken to the hospital after the match, where it was revealed that he had suffered a compound dislocation to his right index finger but there was no fracture.
Australia’s Chef de Mission Anna Meares confirmed that Exum will stay on with the Boomers in Paris.
“He suffered a compound dislocation of the right index finger in this game and X-rays have confirmed that there was no fracture, and he is expected to continue on the path to compete at these Games,” said Meares.
Exum had also suffered a knock on his head in a match against Puerto Rico on Saturday but was cleared by the Boomers’ medical team immediately.
While he remains doubtful for Australia’s Olympics opener against Spain, Exum could make a comeback during one of the remaining two Group A matches in Paris.
Exum, a Dallas Mavericks player in the National Basketball Association (NBA), was an integral part of the Boomers’ team that won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020. They scripted history to become the first nation from outside the Americas and Europe to win a medal in men’s basketball.
World No. 5 Australia, meanwhile, have been in great form ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Led by Patty Mills, the Boomers have won eight of their last 10 matches, including their thrilling 83-82 victory against France on Sunday.
At Paris 2024, the Boomers begin their campaign against four-time Olympic medallist Spain on July 27. They will take on Canada on July 30 before playing their final Group A match against Greece on August 2.
Basketball events at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be conducted between July 27 and August 11.
