After much speculation, officials have confirmed Saturday’s Magic Millions card will be held at its usual home on the Gold Coast, with Racing Queensland announcing the news on Thursday morning.
“Earlier today, senior jockeys galloped on the course proper and deemed it safe to ride including the remediated area near the 500m mark,” the statement read.”Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards also inspected the track and have approved the 10-race feature card proceeding at Gold Coast Turf Club.”
Issues with a section of the course forced last Saturday’s meeting to the Sunshine Coast, but staff were able to replace the affected section of track and the meeting will proceed as planned.
Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said the feedback from the six jockeys, in conjunction with the stewards, was nothing but positive.
“It’s going to be a huge race day, a huge party and it’s just fantastic that both jockeys and stewards were more than satisfied with the course proper this morning,” Bowditch told Sky Sports Radio.
Leading trainers have also expressed their approval with the affected section, with Chris Waller and Michael Kent Jnr both seeing no issue with the surface, while Queensland Jockeys’ Association General Manager Glen Prentice said the feedback from those who rode this morning was overwhelmingly positive.
“All six riders were unanimous in their view that the track rode well and will be safe for participants,” Prentice said.
The surface was rated a soft 5 on Thursday morning, but The Gold Coast is expected to receive significant rain between now and Saturday, including 3-30mm on race day.
Saturday’s card is headlined by the $3 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic and the $3 million Magic Millions 3yo Guineas, with a total purse of $13.75 million across the ten-race card.
