‘Doubled over’: Indian players caught mocking Aussie teen

Sam Konstas kept his name firmly in the mix for an Australian debut – but clearly his Indian rivals aren’t yet impressed by the teenage sensation.

The 19-year-old scored his third century of the season on Sunday while in action for the Prime Minister’s XI team in Canberra, facing a host of India’s Test bowlers.

Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja all featured in the pink-ball tour game, but failed to stop Konstas from hitting it to all parts of Manuka Oval in a rain-reduced fixture.

Konstas reached triple-figures from just 90 balls and was a clear standout for the Aussies, but there was an interesting response from those he was up against.

At times, his flamboyant batting style drew some criticism and jokes from Indian players according to reports from The Indian Express.

“Sarfaraz [Khan] would lift his right leg in the air, contort his body one way to the other, and twirl his arms in a wild fashion,” the article said.

“In the slips, Rohit Sharma doubled over cracking in laughter, as did Rishabh Pant.

“Aesthetics, though, won’t be a reason to watch him bat. He doesn’t have much to offer in that department, at least on the evidence on offer, but cricket at the highest level isn’t about how ‘beautiful’ one’s batting is.

“His batting technique is pretty simple and clear.”

Konstas was overlooked by national selectors for the first two Tests of the summer, but his exploits over the weekend and in Sheffield Shield cricket have kept his name at the centre of discussions – especially after the carnage in the series opener.

With just 10 first-class games to his name, Konstas would loom as a risky pick at the top of the batting order, but the right-hander has already shown his class.

From a bowling perspective, Charlie Anderson finished with two wickets – including the prized scalp of Rohit Sharma – as the visitors chased Australia A’s total of 240 with five wickets in the shed.

Australia will look to bounce back in Adelaide when the second Test kicks off on Friday.
