Emma Raducanu has suffered yet another injury setback ahead of the 2025 Australian Open.
Having finished 2024 on a high, Raducanu was hoping to get her year off to a great start in Auckland but has had to withdraw due to a back issue.
The 56th-ranked WTA star is set to miss another tournament through injury, as her participation at the first Grand Slam of the year is now being questioned.
The Brit had finished 2024 in great form, as Raducanu won all of her matches at the Billie Jean King Cup before her team fell to Slovakia in the semi-finals.
A former Grand Slam winner at the US Open in 2021, Raducanu has been plagued by injuries in recent years, with the latest setback affecting her 2025 preparations.
Speaking ahead of her withdrawal from the ASB Classic in Auckland, Raducanu spoke to the press about her pre-season preparations with coach Nick Cavaday.
“It’s good, we have been together training pretty much day in day out for the last few months back home but it has been going really well,” she said.
“We have been training well, we have very similar outlooks in the way we see the game, so it’s a great bond.”
The British star went on to outline her goals for the 2025 season on the WTA Tour.
“I constantly set goals and re-evaluate but I think for this year my outlook and approach is genuinely just exploring how far I can go and how much of my potential I can reach this year,” said Raducanu.
“I don’t think it’s just one year I have to hit it, I am going to hit it all this year.
“I have got myself into a place where I can get into tournaments this year with my ranking and now it’s just about pushing on and basically just seeing how far I can go.”
At 22 years of age, Raducanu has endured more injuries than many players have in their whole careers, as she misses yet another tournament.
Retiring ahead of matches, during matches, and after matches, Raducanu can’t seem to catch a break, as her body continues to fail her.
Raducanu has now retired due to injury in seven matches, a number that she won’t want to see increase in 2025.
Perhaps her decision to withdraw before her first-round match in Auckland shows maturity, and that lessons have been learned, as she gives herself time to rest ahead of the Australian Open.
Fans of Raducanu will be hoping that she can rest up, and heal to perhaps recover the form that saw her win the US Open as a teenager, just three years ago.
It may now be a race against time for the 22-year-old to regain fitness ahead of the opening Grand Slam of the 2025 season in Melbourne, as Raducanu has just under two weeks to prepare for the Australian Open which begins on January 12.
