England v Australia LIVE: Cricket score and updates from ODI at Lord’s as wicketkeeper controversy hits again

England cricket face Australia cricket in the fourth ODI at Lord’s looking to even the series and set up a thrilling decider.

Harry Brook produced a magnificent century at the Riverside Ground to inspire a rain-affected 46-run victory in Durham on Tuesday, as the captain set a more measured tone with the bat following his contentious “who cares” comments in the build-up. The result not only kept the series alive but ended Australia’s 14-match winning streak in the process, and England need a repeat performance at the home of cricket today to force a series showdown in Bristol on Sunday.

It is Australia’s first time back at Lord’s since Alex Carey’s infamous stumping of Jonny Bairstow during the Ashes, which led to ugly scenes in the Long Room between MCC members and touring players.

England vs Australia

  • Australia lead series 2-1 after Harry Brook hit back with century at Durham

  • England need another win to force decider at Bristol on Sunday

  • Australia win the toss and choose to bowl

  • Delayed play started 2.45pm – match reduced to 39 overs per innings

  • Wicket! Salt out for 22! England 49-1

  • Wicket! Jacks out for 10! England 71-2

  • Duckett 50! England 109-2

England 122-2 (20) Duckett 53, Brook 31, Zampa 0-21 (2)

16:25 , Sonia Twigg

Brook has smashed one through the off side for four, he has found the gap between cover and mid off, it was tossed up by Zampa and well-struck by the England captain.

He follows it up with another one through a similar area, the first one was driven, the second cut but the outcome was the same.

England 114-2 (19) Duckett 53, Brook 22, Abbott 0-29 (4)

16:21 , Sonia Twigg

Sean Abbott is back on from the Pavilion End, his first three overs were expensive, going for 25 runs in total.

Duckett tries to be innovative, plays the scoop and misses, attempting to launch the ball over the wicketkeeper.

The next one is cut through backward point but stopped by Zampa on the boundary.

Duckett clears his front leg and tries to hit it back to the bowler but he lacks all timing and the ball goes into the ground then into the hands of Abbott.

Duckett 50! England 109-2 (18) Duckett 50, Brook 20, Zampa 0-12 (1)

16:17 , Sonia Twigg

After the drinks break it will be time for Adam Zampa to replace Mitchell Marsh from the Nursery End.

The most any bowler can bowl with the reduced overs is 8, and England have brought their hundred up inside the 18th over.

Brook and Duckett have so far just tapped the ball around for singles, but in the fourth ball of the over, Duckett has charged down the wicket and launched Zampa over deep mid on for six!

He follows it up with a single next ball to bring up his half century.

England 97-2 (17) Duckett 40, Brook 18, Starc 0-34 (6)

16:10 , Sonia Twigg

Starc is into the second over of his second spell from the Pavilion End, and is picking up where he started, just limiting England’s scoring options.

Starc goes for a big appeal for caught behind, and it has been given by the umpire, Brook is considering having a look and has reviewed the decision.

Could this be another controversy at Lord’s? The crowd are booing because the replay looks like the ball has bounced just before reaching Inglis’ gloves and it has been given not out.

England 92-2 (16) Duckett 37, Brook 16, Marsh 1-21 (3)

16:04 , Lawrence Ostlere

Harry Brook is in the mood! He begins Marsh’s latest over with a crack through mid-wicket for four, and he adds another boundary through a similar area with a beautifully timed clip off the legs, full of natural power.

Brook then tries a scoop shot which he misses completely, and is called a wide, before ending the over with a dot.

England 81-2 (15) Duckett 36, Brook 7, Starc 0-29 (5)

16:00 , Lawrence Ostlere

Starc begins with a gift that Brook can push away to safety off his hip for four.

Duckett and Brook rack up a flurry of runs as they keep the strike rotating, much to Starc’s frustration, who is struggling to generate any swing.

England 72-2 (14) Duckett 33, Brook 1, Marsh 1-10 (2)

15:55 , Lawrence Ostlere

Harry Brook pinches a quick single to end the over and get off the mark.

Mitchell Starc is immediately thrown the ball to try and take out the England captain.

Wicket! Jacks out for 10! England 71-2

15:53 , Lawrence Ostlere

Will Jacks slices uncomfortably over point which lands safely in no man’s land, worth a couple of runs, but a moment later he tries a similar drive and this time he’s caught at gully. A little reckless, that, though credit goes to Marsh for finding a little bit of away swing.

England 69-1 (13) Duckett 33, Jacks 8, Abbott 0-24 (3)

15:49 , Lawrence Ostlere

Will Jacks pushes Abbott casually through the leg side for four, and Duckett tries to get in on the act, swiping through thin air at a wide-ish delivery.

England have a steady 69 runs on the board through 13 overs – one third of the innings – with one wicket lost.

“With 39 overs, it’s difficult to know exactly what a good target is,” says Stuart Broad on commentary.

England 63-1 (12) Duckett 32, Jacks 3, Marsh 0-7 (1)

15:45 , Lawrence Ostlere

Mitch Marsh brings himself into the bowling attack. Jacks takes a quick single before Marsh throws in a wide, still tweaking his radar.

A too-full, too-wide ball is dealt with by Duckett, cracked over mid-off for four.

England 56-1 (11) Duckett 27, Jacks 2, Abbott 0-18 (2)

15:41 , Lawrence Ostlere

Abbott appeals vociferously after the ball crashed into Duckett’s back pad, but the umpire isn’t interested. The bowler persuades captain Marsh to review it, but the ball pitched outside leg and Australia lose their review.

Duckett finishes the over with a half-volley punched down the ground for four.

Wicket! Salt out for 22! England 49-1 (10) Duckett 21, Jacks 1, Hazlewood 1-14 (5)

15:33 , Sonia Twigg

Hazlewood will stay on from the Nursery End so it won’t be a double bowling change, and Duckett almost leaves himself stranded when the pushes the ball into the ground on the off side, but is sent back to the crease by Salt.

Duckett is struck on the pad next ball, but only Hazlewood appeals and the umpire thought there was an inside edge as he adds another single to his and England’s total.

Wicket! Salt has gone! He drives hard towards backward point and it has been caught, it was a thick outside edge and taken at knee height!

England had just been building on a slow but steady start but that will have dented their momentum!

Jacks get off the mark straight away with a single into the off side.

England 47-0 (9) Salt 22, Duckett 22, Abbott 0-11 (1)

15:27 , Sonia Twigg

Change of bowling and Abbott is into the attack, and Salt slaps him through backward point, a boundary that is cheered and it feels a long time since the last one.

The next one is also cut away through the same area and hit hard by Salt, that feels like it’s relieved a bit of pressure that had been building from the opening bowling partnership.

A very expensive over from Abbott, 12 from his opening over.

England 35-0 (8) Salt 13, Duckett 19, Hazlewood 0-13 (4)

15:22 , Sonia Twigg

Still no change of bowler in sight, as Hazlewood continues. Duckett looks more comfortable now against the left-handed Starc and he offers no width.

Duckett plays a smart cut shot, but it’s straight to backward point, and another one he tries to play but it’s straight into the ground.

England 33-0 (7) Salt 12, Duckett 18, Starc 0-20 (4)

15:18 , Sonia Twigg

Starc will continue from the Pavilion End, England’s run rate so far in this powerplay, which is expected to last eight overs.

The Australian bowler appeals loudly when Duckett is rapped on the pads, and it will be sent upstairs. The England opener will remain at the crease with DRS shown the ball on umpires call for height as it goes over middle stump.

The next ball is fired down the leg side and gives England the first extras of the innings, Duckett then slaps the next one through mid off, beating Labuschagne and bringing another boundary.

He follows it up with one through mid on the next ball for three.

Salt has got the ball through Maxwell! He is one of the best fielders in the game but goes down and can only parry that one that bounces behind for a single at backward point.

England 23-0 (6) Salt 11, Duckett 10, Hazlewood 0-11 (3)

15:11 , Sonia Twigg

Hazlewood bowls to Salt who pushes it through backward point for another couple. England have not got going so far, but there is a long time left in this match, even with the reduced overs.

Salt thrashes the ball over second slip for four, it was hit over Steve Smith and he couldn’t quite get his hands there.

Hazlewood follows it up with one that just beats the outside edge, and a punch off the back foot that is stopped in the ring.

England 17-0 (5) Salt 5, Duckett 10, Starc 0-10 (3)

15:07 , Sonia Twigg

Salt thrashes a drive square, but he doesn’t get the rewards and it’s stopped by Maxwell at backward point.

Salt has whacked one straight back at Starc, it has crashed into the bowler’s foot and deflected off his shin for a couple of runs.

England 14-0 (4) Salt 2, Duckett 10, Hazlewood 0-5 (2)

15:02 , Sonia Twigg

Hazlewood’s first over was a maiden, and Duckett is just struggling to get him away.

After eight deliveries he had yet to go for any runs, but the next ball he adds to his tally with a quick tuck around the corner for another couple to take England into double figures in the fourth over.

But immediately afterwards he follows it up with one that just goes past the outside edge

A short ball is well pulled away by Duckett for England’s first boundary of the innings and Alex Carey chases it in his unfamiliar position in the field.

England 7-0 (3) Salt 1, Duckett 6, Starc 0-7 (2)

14:58 , Sonia Twigg

Starc bowls and Duckett drives hard straight back at the bowler, it was a very difficult chance but has been put down and the Australian bowler is there wringing his hand out.

His line and length have been so difficult for both openers and they are struggling to score anything here. Another one goes straight past the outside edge.

Duckett slices one up and over the slips, it was a bit wider and bounces before the man on the boundary, it took him a while to get off the mark, 8 deliveries, but the first sign of width has brought rewards.

He follows it up with another two to long leg, and another pair into the covers.

England 1-0 (2), Salt 1, Duckett 0, Hazlewood 0-0 (1)

14:54 , Sonia Twigg

Hazlewood will bowl from the Nursery End, the first two balls of the over just go past the outside edge of Phil Salt’s bat.

He has bowled the ideal line and length so far, and the next one goes straight through the England opener.

Salt struck on the pad, comes out of his crease, the ball bobbles behind him as all the players rush towards the wicket, but he is able to get back and put his bat down.

England 1-0 (1), Salt 1, Duckett 0, Starc 0-1 (1)

14:49 , Sonia Twigg

Starc will kick things off from the pavilion end with ball in hand to bowl against Phil Salt, who manages to tuck one away behind square for the first runs of the England innings.

The single brings Duckett on strike, who has to crab-like dig out a yorker first up, the next one shows a bit of movement and has just defended it into the off side.

On the other side, the sun has been applauded as it comes out from behind the clouds for the first time today. It’s not clear where the blue sky is coming from, but clearly it’s there.

The final ball of the over beats the outside edge of Duckett’s bat on its way through to the wicketkeeper.

Weather update: Covers are off

14:26 , Sonia Twigg

The stumps are going back into the ground, the last of the covers have come off and we are just waiting for an official start time, and to find out how many overs have been lost with the more than two hour delay.

The match has been shortened to 39 overs, 20 minutes at the interval, and will start at 2.45pm.

Weather update: The covers are moving

14:17 , Sonia Twigg

The super-sopper has stopped and the covers are starting to come off for a second time at Lord’s, but the sky is quite grey over towards Maida Vale, and the rain has not gone far away.

The three umpires in their pink tops and black trousers have come out onto the field to inspect the pitch.

Weather update: Drizzle falls at Lord’s

14:07 , Sonia Twigg

As soon as the covers went on the rain was the heaviest it had been all day.

Currently it is showing no signs of abating, but the ground staff are working hard and the super-sopper has just come onto the field to try and mop up some of the additional moisture.

Weather update: Bad news at Lord’s

13:49 , Sonia Twigg

It’s bad news at Lord’s just 12 minutes before the game was due to start and the covers have gone back on, the stumps have come out of the ground and it looks like there will be another delay.

Australia and England announce teams

13:45 , Sonia Twigg

Here is a reminder of the England team:

Toss: Australia win and choose to bowl

13:31 , Sonia Twigg

Australia have won the toss and Mitchell Marsh has -unsurprisingly – declared they will have a bowl first in the grey overcast conditions at Lord’s.

Adam Zampa, Josh Inglis and Travis Head come into the side in place of Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie and Matt Short.

Toss update: 1.30pm

13:19 , Sonia Twigg

The covers are now fully off, the toss will take place at 1.30pm and the match will start at 2pm.

Toss at 1.30

13:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Good news from Lord’s – assuming there is no further rain, the toss will take place at 1.30pm BST.

43 overs a side. Eoin Morgan says the pitch looks good and firm, with the famous drainage system doing the job on the outfield, too.

Weather update: The covers are coming off

12:58 , Sonia Twigg

It’s looking a lot more optimistic than it was even half an hour ago, the umpires are out and the covers are being taken off.

Weather update: The covers are moving

12:42 , Sonia Twigg

For the first time today since the ground opened, there is sign of movement and the covers are being slowly rolled up.

We are a long way from actually getting any play underway, but it is a good start.

Weather update: The drizzle continues

12:25 , Sonia Twigg

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the covers are still well and truly on and unmoved and it is continuing to drizzle fairly consistently at Lord’s.

No sign of play in the immediate future, but hopefully it will brighten up this afternoon.

England captain Brook clears up ‘who cares’ comment

12:12 , Lawrence Ostlere

Brook raised eyebrows with some of his comments after England’s loss in the series opener in Nottingham, reflecting on some loose dismissals by saying: “If you get caught somewhere on the boundary or in the field then who cares?”.

Some interpreted that as a flippant approach to what is being billed – and priced – as an elite contest, but he suggested there had been a misunderstanding of his words.

“I think people took that a little bit the wrong way. You’ve got to go out and play fearlessly and almost have that ‘who cares?’ attitude but that’s not a ‘who cares if we lose?’ attitude,” he said.

“We all want to win, but you don’t want to go out and have that fear of getting out. You’ve seen it so many times in the Test environment, at the start Stokesy (captain Ben Stokes) was getting out caught at mid-on which is unheard of before, so you’ve got to go out with that fearless attitude and try to take it to the bowlers.”

Weather update: The toss has been officially delayed

12:03 , Sonia Twigg

The toss should have taken place at 12pm all going smoothly, but it has been delayed, no idea how long for so far as he rain has not let up.

Weather update: Drizzling rain at Lord’s

11:57 , Lawrence Ostlere

It is drizzling at Lord’s right now and that could spell bad news for this fourth ODI, but there’s been no update for the past couple of hours, so 12.30pm is still the official start time…

Harry Brook ‘relieved’ to record first ODI century

11:48 , Lawrence Ostlere

“I’m relieved, for sure. It’s just nice to see some rewards,” Brook said. “I’m just glad I managed to play the way I wanted to. It’s nice to get that first hundred on the board and hopefully there’s plenty more to come.

“I feel like I’ve been a little bit stop-start this summer, I’ve had a lot of starts – 30s and 40s – and then not managed to convert, which is frustrating. To do that, I feel like I’m back in a good place. Obviously it’s nice to score runs against Australia but scoring runs is amazing no matter who it is against.”

Third ODI report: Relief for Harry Brook as maiden hundred sets up much-needed win

11:32 , Lawrence Ostlere

Harry Brook breathed a major sigh of relief after chalking up his first ODI century and a first win as England captain on a memorable day in Durham on Tuesday.

After heavy losses to Australia at Trent Bridge and Headingley, England knew nothing less than victory would be enough to keep themselves in the five-match series and Brook’s masterful innings delivered.

Coming to the crease at 11 for two after both openers had fallen to Mitchell Starc, he peeled off a sensational 110 not out. Rain meant England were unable to complete their pursuit of 305 but the hosts still walked away with a 46-run win on Duckworth-Lewis-Stern thanks to Brook’s brilliance and a stand of 156 with Will Jacks (84).

Weather update: Play still set to go ahead at 12.30pm

11:27 , Lawrence Ostlere

The rain covers are on at Lord’s right now as groundstaff try to protect the middle from what has been a wet morning so far in London. The forecast is relatively dry for the afternoon, though, and as things stand play is set to go ahead at the slightly unusual start time of 12.30pm.

England v Australia – fourth ODI

11:20 , Lawrence Ostlere

It’s all to play for in the fourth ODI on Friday after England’s rain-affected victory kept the series against Australia alive (12.30pm, Sky Sports Main Event).

Skipper Harry Brook was in fine form in Durham on Tuesday, with an unbeaten 110, and was guiding his side to what looked like a certain victory before the rain came at the Riverside.

England were well ahead of the DLS score courtesy of Brook’s innings along with a vital 84 from Will Jacks, allowing the hosts to complete a 46-run victory via DLS and a win at Lord’s today will tie the series with one left to play.
