Every Aussie player at Australian Open 2025: Meet this year’s local tennis contingent | Sporting News Australia

A total of 22 Aussies will feature across the 2025 Australian Open men’s and women’s singles main draws.

The 14-player men’s contingent is stacked with talent, including three seeds – Alex de Minaur, Alexei Popyrin and Jordan Thompson.

Out of the eight women, Olivia Gadecki is the only player to have earned a berth via her ranking, rather than with a wildcard or through qualifying.

The Sporting News compiles every Australian in action at this year’s season-opening grand slam.

Men’s singles

Alex de Minaur

De Minaur headlines the Australian contingent as the player most likely to make a deep run at Melbourne Park.

‘The Demon’ has been seeded within the top 8 for the first time in his grand slam career which means he’ll dodge players ranked above him until at least the quarter-final.

After a career-best season last year, the 25-year-old will look to make a bright start to 2025.

First round match: Botic van de Zandschulp (NED)

Nick Kyrgios

He’s back… maybe.

Kyrgios has officially returned to the pro tennis circuit, but there are still question marks around his fitness.

If he’s good to go, there’s no doubt he’ll garner plenty of attention on and off-court at Melbourne Park.

First round match: Jacob Fearnley (GBR)

Alexei Popyrin

Often seen as a bit of a quiet achiever, there was nothing quiet about Popyrin’s Masters 1000 title in Montreal last year.

The career-best result saw him fly up the rankings and has led to him receiving his first seeding (25) at the Australian Open.

This could be the year he goes deep at his home slam.

First round match: Corentin Moutet (FRA)

Jordan Thompson

The third Australian to earn a seed (27) at this year’s tournament, Thompson enjoyed a top 2024 in both singles and doubles.

His ability to slug out wins in five-set marathons make him an undesirable opponent in grand slam play.

Thompson is another Aussie with a good chance of stringing together a few victories in Melbourne.

First round match: [Q] Dominik Koepfer (GER)

Christopher O’Connell

In a sport where players can dramatically rise and fall in the rankings, O’Connell has enjoyed some impressive consistency in recent years.

The 30-year-old has spent the past three seasons in the top 100 and looks primed for another positive campaign.

He’s never made it past the third round at the Australian Open. Despite a tough first opponent, can he change that in 2025?

First round match: [12] Tommy Paul (USA)

Aleksandar Vukic

Since cracking into the top 100 in 2023, Vukic hasn’t looked back.

Notably, the world No. 67 enjoyed an impressive win over Casper Ruud in Shanghai late last year.

After first round exits in his last two Melbourne Park appearances, he has a solid opening match-up for 2025.

First round match: Damir Džumhur (BIH)

Rinky Hijikata

Hijikata enters the year-opening grand slam in some nice form.

He reached the final of the Sydney Challenger in November and has recently battled through qualifiers to make the quarter-final of the Adelaide International.

Lots to like about the 23-year-old at this stage of his career.

First round match: Mitchell Krueger (USA)

Thanasi Kokkinakis

Kokkinakis is always a popular figure at Melbourne Park.

He has a habit of going the distance at grand slams, so he is one to watch for entertainment.

A tricky first round opponent in Roman Safiullin awaits.

First round match: Roman Safiullin

Thanasi Kokkinakis

James Duckworth

Duckworth is gearing up to feature in his 12th Australian Open singles main draw.

In front of a home crowd, the 32-year-old veteran will prove a serious test for opponents.

First round match: Dominic Stricker (SUI)

Adam Walton

Walton cracked the top 100 for the first time in his career mid-way through last season.

His ability to play at a good level week in week out make him a threat at any stage this tournament.

First round match: Quentin Halys (FRA)

Li Tu (WC)

Tu is considered a ‘late bloomer’ by tennis standards, with the 28-year-old going up another gear recently.

His 2024 season highlight came at the US Open, when he played Carlos Alcaraz in the first round after battling through the qualifying tournament.

First round match: [24] Jiri Lehecka (CZE)

Omar Jasika (WC)

Jasika has had a challenging career but is now back playing at a solid level.

His relentless play style should serve him well in Melbourne.

First round match: Hugo Gaston (FRA)

Tristan Schoolkate (WC)

Schoolkate, the world No. 173, will make his Australian Open debut this year.

The 23-year-old will no doubt look to build off the invaluable experience – win or lose.

First round match: Taro Daniel (JPN)

James McCabe (WC)

At world No. 258, McCabe will be the lowest-ranked Aussie man at the upcoming grand slam.

The 21-year-old has landed an unpredictable teenage qualifier in the first round.

Women’s singles

Olivia Gadecki

Gadecki was the only Australian woman to be named on the main draw through her ranking.

She has been a consistent rankings riser over the past few years and will hope a run at Melbourne Park can help establish her in the top 100 for 2025.

First round match: Veronika Kudermetova

Ajla Tomljanovic (WC)

Time out due to injury has seen Tomljanovic’s ranking drop, but she’ll still be in action in 2025 thanks to a wildcard.

Promisingly, the 31-year-old got back to regular tournament play in the back half of last year.

Tomljanovic’s only match of the current Australian summer was a defeat to Ashlyn Krueger – her Australian Open first round opponent – in Adelaide.

First round match: Ashlyn Krueger (USA)

Talia Gibson (WC)

Gibson spent the entirety of the 2024 season within the top 200 for the first time in her career.

The 20-year-old is considered a promising talent and has the chance to put herself in the spotlight this tournament.

First round match: Zeynep Sönmez (TUR)

Daria Saville (WC)

Injury has hampered Saville’s availability on tour in recent years, but she’s back to playing regular tennis.

Despite opening-round defeats in both her recent warm-up tournaments, the 30-year-old’s tenacity and talent always make her a threat at Melbourne Park.

First round match: Anna Blinkova

Daria Saville

Emerson Jones (WC)

The No. 1 junior in the world, Jones is making her senior Australian Open debut.

Her win over Wang Xinyu at the Adelaide International proved that she is WTA-level ready, with a promising career ahead.

The 16-year-old takes on former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the first round, which will be equally daunting and exciting.

First round match: [6] Elena Rybakina (KAZ)

Maya Joint (WC)

Another young star to keep an eye on, Joint enters her maiden Australian Open in impressive form.

At the time of writing, the 18-year-old has progressed to the semi-finals of the Hobart International.

She will meet world No. 7 Jessica Pegula in the opening round, but that’s unlikely to phase Joint, even if she will be classed as a heavy underdog.

First round match: [7] Jessica Pegula (USA)

Kimberly Birrell (Q)

Despite being Australia’s current top-ranked female, Birrell was not given a wildcard.

However, she battled her way through three rounds of qualifying and will feature in the main draw for the sixth time of her career.

After upsetting top-10 player Emma Navarro at the Brisbane International earlier in the month, Birrell is in promising form.

First round match: [13] Anna Kalinskaya

Kimberley Birrell Australian Open

Destanee Aiava (Q)

The second of two Aussie women to successfully make it through qualifying, 24-year-old Aiava will return to Melbourne Park for the first time since 2021.

After achieving a career-high rank of 133 last year, she will hope a strong tournament can propel her towards the top 100.

First round match: Greet Minnen (BEL)
