The Australian cricket team ended their tour of England with a memorable victory as they won the rain-hit series decider by 49 runs (DLS method). The World Champions had luck on their side as rain started in the 21st over just four balls after the minimum required 20 overs for a result were bowled in their innings.

The series proved to be eventful as Australia took a 2-0 lead before the Harry Brook-led outfit made a strong comeback to level the series. In the fifth ODI on Sunday (September 29), stand-in skipper Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bowl first. England posted a total of 309 on the board, with Ben Duckett making a century and Harry Brook making a quick-fire 52-ball 72. Travis Head was the pick of the bowlers for Australia with a four-wicket haul.

In reply, Matthew Short’s 30-ball 58 gave Australia a quick start as they raced past the 100-run mark after just 10 overs. When rain stopped play, Australia had 165 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets in 20.4 overs.

Australia Achieve Never-Done-Before

The Australian spin bowling attack was once again the pick of the bowling unit for the six-time World Cup-winners. In the Bristol ODI, they took eight of the nine English wickets. This follows a similar performance at Trent Bridge where they got nine scalps. The displays in the first and final game of the series are the first and fourth best in history by Australian spinners in an ODI game.

By virtue of the memorable effort in the 5th ODI, Australian spinners finished the series with 23 wickets making it the first-ever instance of spin bowlers taking more than 20 wickets in a bilteral series for Australia.

Adam Zampa continued his incredible form in white-ball cricket for the national and finished as the second-highest wicket-taker with eight wickets in four matches. Head took six wickets in four innings while Marnus Labuschagne got three scalps in five outings. Glenn Maxwell took five wickets in four innings too. Matthew Short also got one dismissal.

The Bristol clash also set the record for the most overs bowled by spinners in an ODI for Australia. The spin-bowling unit were given 32.2 overs by Smith beating the previous record set in 2019 when 32 overs were bowled by spinners for Australia against Pakistan in Sharjah.
