Five Aussies to watch in college basketball 2024-25 | Sporting News Australia

College basketball is officially back, as the next generation of elite players get ready to show their stuff.

As they set off on the road to March, with a national championship the goal, the next crop of NBA and WNBA stars will ply their trade across America’s largest universities, names like Duke’s Cooper Flagg and UConn’s Paige Bueckers likely to dominate the headlines.

But there will also be a large contingent of Aussie players who have set off on college journeys, looking to continue the legacies of Patty Mills, Alanna Smith, and many more.

Five Aussies to watch in college basketball this season

Georgia Amoore – Kentucky Wildcats

Amoore is set to be one of the standout players in women’s college basketball this season, transferring to Kentucky to follow outgoing Virginia Tech coach Kenny Brooks.

Last season, Amoore was named a Third Team All-American, First Team All-ACC, and made it all the way to the NCAA’s Final Four, eliminated by LSU but not before setting the record for most threes made in a single tournament run.

Now in her fifth college season and first with Kentucky, she has come out of the gates firing, averaging 16.2 points per game, as she hopes to help return the Wildcats back to March Madness for the first time since 2022.

Tyrese Proctor – Duke Blue Devils

It could be a make-or-break year for Proctor, as he enters his third season with the Blue Devils.

Many assumed that he would have declared for the NBA draft following last season, but Proctor opted to return to the team alongside expected 2025 number one pick Flagg, in pursuit of an elusive national championship.

With his production up across the board, including an early 15% leap from behind the three-point line, Proctor could see his draft stock rise again, with plenty of eyeballs on him this go round.

Georgia Woolley – Syracuse Orange

Entering her senior year, expectations are high on Syracuse guard Georgia Woolley.

Coming off their first tournament appearance since 2021, Woolley will undertake even more of the team’s scoring, which she has proven more than capable of, including an impressive three-point percentage leap.

Alongside fellow Aussie Sophie Burrows, Woolley will be the key to Syracuse’s success this year, as she tries to go out with a bang.

Alex Condon – Florida Gators

Once considered an elite prospect in the AFL, Alex Condon has quickly become a revelation in the Australian basketball scene.

He has been starring for Florida for the last season and a half, up to double-digit scoring to begin the 2024-25 season.

If he maintains this pace, he is likely to hear his name in NBA Draft discussions, and leave the sherrin behind.

Reyne Smith – Louisville Cardinals

Another off-season transfer, Smith followed outgoing Charleston Cougars Pat Kelsey to Louisville, where he is playing his senior season.

A prolific shooter, Smith will be an electric watch for Cardinals fans, averaging 14.8 points per game to begin his tenure.

Seeking to go one better than last year’s first round tournament exit, Smith and Louisville could be a match made in heaven, and Aussie enthusiasts should reap the rewards.
