Five-steal effort puts Dyson Daniels on historic pace | Sporting News Australia

Dyson Daniels put in another monster performance on defence Monday, despite his Atlanta Hawks being unable to extend their win streak to six games.

As he has all season, Daniels harassed the Denver Nuggets on and off the ball, coming away with five steals and a block, as well as 18 points and six assists.

While Atlanta were defeated by Denver, Daniels extended his lead on the league for takeaways, and continued on what is looking like a historic pace for the Australian.

Dyson Daniels on historic steals pace

It has been some type of defensive season for Dyson Daniels so far, the Australian currently running away with the league’s steals title.

But after adding another five to his tally in the Hawks loss, he is also maintaining what is a historic pace for his new team.

The current record for most steals in a season is 212, recorded three times by Mookie Blaylock in 1992-93, 1995-96, and 1996-97.

Through 23 games, Daniels has 73 steals, averaging 3.17 a game. If he were to continue his season at this current pace, he would finish the year with 260 steals, smashing Blaylock’s record.

Not only this, but it would also tie Alvin Robertson for the sixth most steals in a single season of all-time.

Deflections record in Daniels’ grasp

Daniels is also primed to obliterate the all-time record for deflections in a season, currently held by Robert Covington, with 315 deflections during the 2017-18 season.

The Australian currently has 148 deflections through 23 games, averaging a stunning 6.5 per game.

Trailing Covington by 167, Daniels will pass him in around 25 games if he can keep up his current form, in early February.
