Forget Noosa: The two Australian beaches named the best in the world by Lonely Planet

Two Australian beaches have been crowned the best in the world by Lonely Planet, with Whitehaven Beach in Queensland and Squeaky Beach in Victoria taking the top two spots on the coveted list.

Known for their pristine sands, crystal-clear waters, and unique natural features, these beaches are quintessential Aussie gems that have captured the hearts of travellers globally.

Standing proud at number one, Queensland’s Whitehaven Beach is often referred to as ‘heaven on earth’.

Located in the heart of the Whitsundays, this seven-kilometre stretch of powder-white silica sand and swirling turquoise waters is postcard-perfect.

Whitehaven’s sand is 98 per cent pure silica, which gives it its bright, white colour and a uniquely soft, almost silky texture.

The beach is part of Whitsunday Island, the largest of the 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays group, and it’s only accessible by boat, seaplane, or helicopter – adding to its exclusive, untouched allure.

Travellers from all over the world make the trip to experience the stunning views from Hill Inlet, a lookout point that offers panoramic vistas of the beach’s iconic swirling sandbars.

With year-round water temperatures averaging 26C, Whitehaven Beach is the perfect spot to swim, snorkel, or simply unwind on one of the world’s most beautiful shores.

Coming in second place on the list is Squeaky Beach, located in Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria.

The beach is named after the distinctive squeak that visitors hear underfoot as they walk across the sand.

The unique sound is created by rounded quartz grains, which rub together when stepped on.

Perfect for adventurous families and nature lovers, Squeaky Beach is surrounded by protected wilderness, offering hidden rock pools and granite boulders that create a natural maze for visitors to explore.

For those looking to stretch their legs, Wilsons Promontory offers several walking tracks nearby, including the Lilly Pilly Gully Walk, where birdwatchers can spot Eastern Yellow Robins and Superb Fairywrens.

The beach itself looks out onto distant islands and granite headlands, making it the ideal spot to disconnect from the city and reconnect with nature.

The national park is also one of Victoria’s most beloved ecotourism destinations.

In addition to its stunning beaches, it’s home to iconic Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, and emus.

The park is only accessible by car, with Yanakie being the nearest town to the park entrance.

Travel Victoria recommends day trips for those short on time, but for visitors looking to stay overnight, the park offers camping and accommodation options.

Just be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife after dusk, as many animals become more active at night.

Travellers have sung the praises of both beaches online.

‘Squeaky Beach is such a fun spot. Kids love the sound of the sand, but the views and rock formations are what make it unforgettable,’ a mum said.

‘The water at Whitehaven is the bluest I’ve ever seen, and the sand feels like powder,’ another wrote.

An American couple added: ‘We visited Squeaky Beach for the squeaky sand, but it ended up being one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen. The whole national park is incredible.’
