Former world number one withdraws from the Australian Open along with 2024 Billie Jean King Cup champion

The 2025 Australian Open is rapidly approaching, where Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka will be looking to defend their titles.

Mats Wilander thinks Sabalenka will win the Australian Open, which would be a third successive title for the Belarusian.

Sabalenka ended 2024 ranked first in the world, having added the US Open title to her triumph in Melbourne.

Sinner did likewise, with the Italian world number one also winning the Australian Open and US Open in 2024.

Both players are now getting in shape for the first Grand Slam of 2025, with Sabalenka playing the Brisbane International while Sinner has been training at Rod Laver Arena.

Caroline Wozniacki withdraws from 2025 Australian Open

Plenty of other star names will be taking part in the major tournament, including Stan Wawrinka, who has been handed a wildcard.

Simona Halep meanwhile had been handed a qualifying wildcard, but she has since withdrawn due to injury.

And the two-time Grand Slam champion has now been joined in her withdrawal by another Grand Slam champion in Caroline Wozniacki, as per Tennisform.

The 34-year-old former world number one ironically won her only major championship at the 2018 Australian Open against Halep.

Martina Trevisan joins Caroline Wozniacki in Australian Open withdrawal

There has indeed been another Australian Open withdrawal, with Italian Martina Trevisan pulling out with injury.

She helped Italy claim their first Billie Jean King Cup title in 11 years in November, having been part of the losing side in the 2023 final.

The 2025 Australian Open returns to Melbourne later this month, with the ATP and WTA stars looking to get their Grand Slam seasons off to the best possible start.

But all eyes will likely be on Sabalenka and Sinner, who the other players will undoubtedly be aiming to upset when given the opportunity.

Such an upset is, however, unlikely given the form of the Belarusian and the Italian on hard courts in recent times.
