Gavaskar takes aim at media over ‘fanciful’ reports

Indian cricket great Sunil Gavaskar has accused the Australian media of writing “fanciful” stories about India after the first Test in Perth.

Australia lost that match by 295 runs in a shock result at Optus Stadium, with the hosts coming under fierce criticism.

After the 3-1 series win, Pat Cummins said there was fair and unfair analysis of his side from that loss while Travis Head said there had been narratives he disagreed with.

Gavaskar though, believes the Aussie media became the “extended support staff of the Australian cricket team”.

“Suddenly stories started to appear in the media about stuff that was fanciful to say the least,” he wrote in his column for The Sydney Morning Herald.

“It was amusing to those who follow the Indian team and who know that not many even read the papers being engrossed as they are in their handheld devices.

“The Indian team is well aware that once such stories appear, that indicates that the opposition is rattled.

“The stories kept changing every day and provided more amusement to those of us who have been to these shores before.”

The biggest storylines that came from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in regards to India appeared to be Virat Kohli’s shoulder barge of Sam Konstas and Rohit Sharma’s decision to sit out the SCG Test.

There was also controversy throughout the series when Ravindra Jadeja conducted a press conference with no English spoken while Virat Kohli was involved in an airport exchange with reporters.
